Arrested for asking a policeman his badge number

Whilst the video is shocking, and shows a gross misuse of power on behalf of the police involved, what I find more worrying is the attempts by people on here to defend their behaviour.

Yes, the women are potentially being a nuisance - but I'm glad they're being so, they have a valid complaint. If they're not there asking a police man why he isn't displaying his badge number (and worse still refusing to state his badge number!) - who will do?

This is very quickly becoming out of hand. The police are public servants, who are employed to serve and protect us, and uphold the law. At no point in that video can I see any of those three things being done.

And the award for most irrelevant and extreme anologies given has to go to v0n.

Indeed - if the women were being violent, threatening to themselves, the police or others, then yes, reasonable force should be used. Unless asking the police questions and taking photographs because the police aren't giving their numbers is suddenly violent and dangerous.

I don't see how they can be defended in this case. I guess some people just enjoy the idea of being mishandled by the police for no reason. Police-State Britain, here we come!

Edit: I've also noticed a few justifications of their actions by comparing them to other places' police force as if that suddenly makes it okay! If we started shooting Jews, would we justify it by saying "Well, Hitler gassed them, we're not doing that."?! o_o

its not rare we are hearing about the police getting out of hand more and more and two arrest 2 women hold them 4 days in prison then drop the charges is bang out of order.
Especially when all they where doing is asking for a badge number thats meant to be shown and taking a picture. The police in that video are a joke.

It is rare when you look at how many arrests are carried out. Bare in mind you are only hearing what the media choose to publicise, even then there aren't many cases.

The police are only human and they seem to let any old idiot join the force these days. I don't mind if the police use excessive force against thugs and chavs and harder criminals but to me the police seem to be picking on the weak and the defenceless.

What a bunch of cowards...the police needs a few hardmen to pick on real hardened criminals. Most police these days are a bunch of pansies, everyday men with a bit of training.

Seems quite ridiculous and heavy handed, but without knowing the full story there's no point drawing a conclusion.

Although, I did wonder why the three women "watching the watchers" were dressed in all black with sunglasses and hoods up, if they're doing nothing wrong?
Because it makes them anonymous - one of the crowd and unidentifiable (although not for being afraid of anything). People have been identified in the past by various organisations and targeted because they protested against something, so this eliminates that and makes them look more of a group than individuals.

Well. I had a look at that footage again this afternoon and I'm still puzzled what seems to be unclear about this situation.
- the day is 08 August 2008.
- 600 protesters prepare to sturm the gates of power plant powering "1.4 million homes" in Kent (official statistics).
- Police units around at the gates of "activist" encampment (seen peacefully barricaded from the outside world on footage). They start filming encampment, preparing for "activist" march on the gates at around 13:20

- Few minutes later "single movver" and her friend "movver of three", at the time visiting Hoo area to take photos of Kents nature at its finest, accidentaly find themselves nearby the location, emerge from general direction of barricades around "activist" camp, in traditional Cornish hoodies and protective eyewear to greet the units in the camp and take holiday photos. We see unit with camera turned back from the van to be present during introductions.

- Pleasantries, curiosities and general chit chat between "single movver from Cornwall" and her friend "movver of three" is entertained for several minutes after which police units repeatedly ask to stop interfering with their work

- After few more minutes "single movver from Cornwall" and her friend "moover of three", still sporting traditional hoodies and protective eyewear start following various members of the unit gathering numbers and taking pictures. This notepad waving and curiosity comes to a sudden stop at around 13:38 when police takes a closer look at the "single movver from Cornwall", removes her hood and her protective eyewear and takes a picture of her face.

Two minutes later, at 13:40 we see "muvver of three" being informed they are being arrested for interfering with police officers at work, shortly after we see her kicking policemen during arrest and policeman holding her feet down.

They were probably held until the end of the protests and released without charge, because who would punish three children for their muvver still being pothead on power trip and taking trips with her internet buddy to the other side of the country just to participate in some bizarre enviro terrorism escapades slash wave with notepads in front of riot police while wearing hoodies and horse fly eye wear.

And what a bizarre siege it was. The attempt to leave 1.4 million people without light ended with 200 "activists" storming the gates of the plant, and being forced back by police armed with riot shields and batons. 123 demonstrators needed rescue by police boats after trying to row to the coal power station against strong winds. Over 50 people arrested for doing stupid things. My money. My taxes. Police time. Spent on entertaining and fishing out complete idiots for seven days. Because they didn't like Medway having electricity. And now a year later this hair bleeching, "Emily has notepad, be very affraid" meme deserving cow is back with a vengeance and she wants people fired. She wants apology. She was pressure pointed. She was photographed. My god. Oh, the police brutality.

Don't see what so extreme about my analogies. Their actions. That I find extreme. Anyone over age of 17 being inside such camp. That I find extreme. Anyone monitoring Police monitoring them, when the sole reason for Police monitoring was THEM monitoring Police monitoring them. I find extreme to even type. The idea of 600 adult people trying to switch off power source in their own country. That I find extreme. Extremist even. 123 people trying to swim to the power plant with intention of leaving me without OCUK and Coronation Street in the middle of the summer. Extreme.
But my god. Emily was pressure pointed. She was almost scratched. Nearly bruised. She was not comfortable at all. And worse yet. Look at the pictures. Her hoody was almost torn.

it obviously is a tiny minority however surely what you're saying there is a bit flawed as the vast majority of cases where an individual officer or officers step over their remit will probably go unreported/not be reported in the media?

Like i said earlier I think the vast majority of police officers are decent honest people though and we shouldn't lose sight of that.

v0n -You could really wipe the floor with Joseph Goebbels, Comical Ali and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad all at the same time when it comes to spinning something. Things like "siege", "terrorism" and "pothead" thrown in randomly. Genius.

Ok.. ok.. maybe I'm wrong - maybe crowd trying to force their way in from land and water into guarded property is not called siege.
And few "activists" forcing their way in, damaging installation and turning off power for 1.4 million people (successfully executed on second attempt in December 08) doesn't classify as terrorism.
Maybe "movver of three" willing to travel 300 miles to screw with Police units in hoodie and sunglasses is not an idiot. Or pothead.
Maybe I lost touch with spirit of youth and I don't see those things for what they are? Maybe the whole gathering was only trying to sing Kumbaya My Lord to power plant workers and the little issue of emergency units attending to this small trespass onto private ground with overall cost of over £5 million to taxpayer was just a peaceful Lord Of the Rings style skirmish re-enactment. Maybe I am looking at it wrong. Convince me. What do you see? :)

Maybe blowing up a power station would be terrorism, vandalism isn't...
