Sounds silly but I used to love Seagates but recently theyve been awful, back in the day IBM were great but then had the Deathstars...

If I was ordering a few 1tb drives for backup and storage what is the current thinking on a reliable drive that peope would trust to store their stuff on.

Many thanks,

Rik

The Deahtstars were what 6 years ago?

Im guessing the tech in hitachi drives may have changed ever so slightly in this time.
The hitachi drives have shown to be rathe good drives especially seeing the price they're at now.

Personally I went with Smmy F1 1TBs whisper quiet, nice and cool :)

Theres also some silly deals on the 1.5TBs kicking about at the moment and thats currently cheapest gb/£

Hi guys,

I mentioned the Deathstars for historic reference to brands that were good can 180 and turn bad instantly then change to good again.

Ive got some Sammy 1tb's at the moment but had read on here peeps having some issues with them too?

I do like em, very quiet.

The Hitachi 1Tb drives that recently went for very cheap still have a higher than adverage failure rate, so they are cheaper for a reason. Bar the bad batch that has now been sorted, I'll still go with Seagate. Samsungs are good, but their RMA service leaves a lot to be desired.

I'd go with Seagate, Western Digital and Samsung in that order.

Backup drives should really be the energy efficient ones, Western Digitals Green and Samsungs F2 are the ones to go for.

IMO it doesn't particularly matter about brand reliability. Outside the occasional schoolboy error like Seagate's latest, they're all pretty much the same at the consumer level drives. And a backup is a must, regardless of how reliable the drive is meant to be, so reliability really isn't an issue for me.

Prob go for a Western Digital. One of my Samsung F1's just died (Part of a RAID5 array, so I havn't lost any data). I had a DOA Samsung as well last year.

To be honest though, they are all pretty much the same - i've had plenty of seagates and western digitals die on me in the past.
