Got my degree marks today

Finished my degree at the university of manchester doing information systems engineering this year and just got my marks. Averaged 58 overall, 2 % away from a 2:1  but oh well still got my degree and a 2:2 at manchester is still ok... anyone else graduating this year ? or did anyone in the past.

I was 1% off a 2:1. Peed me off no end, but they left so little time for appeals before graduation it wasn't even worth it.

Not the end of the world though, at least you did some work. A 3rd is basically the "my parents have money and I turned up" mark. A 2nd is really "I spent a bit too much time drinking."

thanks. Im feeling much better about it today! i have a degree after all!! yesterday however, i was gutted!

You can request remarks but you have to pay! i know someone who got 69% and had everything remarked and it came back the same

it really isnt worth it. its marked and remarked anyway!

At Edinburgh you didn't have to pay, but if the remark came back lower, then the new lower mark would be used! And obiously in a multiple choise exam this makes no sense, only something with subjective writing where maybe the marker wasn't happy etc, you might gain a few % in that 1 exam. But then, will that make a difference overall. Probably no. In the end the universities are very strict.

However nothing stops you putting the % on your cv. a good degree at a good uni and getting 68-69% is taken very well.

I get my final results on the 1st of July, cant wait! Think I might have just scraped a 1st, but 100% no lower than a 2:1. Thats in computer science at Hull by the way. I don't really care for the whole institutional elitism rubbish, my course is accredited by the BCS so who cares!

I was similar when I sat my finals. Was basically guaranteed a 2:1 due to 3rd year counting 50% and the 4th final year 50% of which I had got 70-80% average in all homework and projects. So to get a 2.2 basically meant I would have to get 40-50% in every exam. However, I was dead on 70 %, and to get a first I would need to average at least a first in every exam. Bieng in the situation of being guaranteed a 2.1 but maybe, if absolutely everything goes well and I don't mess up I get a first, was quite horrible - in a strange way.

In the end I scraped through but it as nerve racking getting my results on-line 1 at a time.

not the same if it was in top 10! what's the entry requirements? had a quick look at the entry requirements BBB for CompSci - hardly cream of the crop mate! - and accordingly the courses in general wont be of the same academic rigour - they'll be dumbed down (hard maths removed from Computer Science for example) - i'm not saying people coming out of these places are not any good, but not in the same league

11 - 20 - yea I would say 2nd rate, 20+ third rate and top 10 - first rate! and that's pretty much how it is!

Well, yeah, I don't think anyone is going to claim UEA is equivalent to a top 10 uni, but calling it crap is a bit harsh.

BBB was pretty much the equivalent of what I got for A-Level so it's not as if I even had the choice of going to the likes of Southampton, Imperial, Warwick or wherever. If I'd said 'omg look at what I got, UEA is the best uni ev0r!!11' then your response I think would have been justified...

Anyway, if this was a 'which uni should I go to?' thread then I'd listen, but it's not, so I'm happy with what I got and enjoyed my time at a decent enough university :)

Get mine on wednesday, sucks that you were only a couple of % of a 2.1 :(

What are the rules these days if you get a borderline mark? I suspect i will get 68/69/70 and just miss a first.

Can you request a remark if you get 69%?

A friend from school had a GCSE paper remarked and got a lower grade and she had to take the remarked grade! :o

Well done to everyone who posted their grades, yeh all my friends are getting 2:1s also, i'm happy for them, not feeling jealous or anything, like someone else said, it's done now i have to move forward and take the next step in my life.

Yeh manchester university computer science students get their grades next monday so good luck with that mate.

Best places to find IT related jobs ?

it was a bit harsh, that's all i was trying to get across was that the grading system is a bit crap and something needs to be done about it - something like a CATS system, I also hate what Universites do with their classification quotas (home many people should get 1st each year irrespective if they are good enough for a 1st) - it does go on!

anyway congratulations, best years of your life? got a job lined up? it's all down hill from here on - you have to become a responsible member of society!

I do actually agree about the grading system, it'd be nice to have a level playing field, but I'm not sure that's ever going to happen.

Had a great time, hopefully not the best years of my life as although they were pretty awesome I don't want to think everything's going to be downhill from here! :D

Got a PhD in Speech Processing lined up (UEA again). Interesting project and good research team/supervisor so hopefully will turn out well :) As for responsible member of society? I think I'll give that one a miss for 3 years or so  ;)

Interesting thread,

Phil I'd be interested to hear your honest thoughts about the course? I took the work route instead of Uni and now I've been made redundant I'm looking to go to the UEA in September. I've been accepted for Comp Sci but I have to do a foundation year in science which I'm actually quite looking forward to because it's quite a general course so I'll be able to choose what I really want to follow it with.

Basically, the UEA is my back up plan if I don't get the job I want at the moment (just holding out for an interview now). I live local and have always thought that apart from being a bit 'concretey' it's quite a nice place, combined with the gigs they have and the sportspark I think I'd really enjoy myself.

I go to Kent University studying Business Computing and it use to be ranked 6th in the UK for computer science. We have the authors and creators of the BlueJ JAVA programming environment as lecturers which many other universities use in their own courses which is kind of cool.

I haven't received my result for my second year yet but I can tell you my exams were pretty damn difficult all round and I'm expecting a 2:2 after how it went HOPEFULLY. I have friends which go to other universities and the difficulty and depth of the learning material is far much harder and more in depth in higher grade universities.

In my first year (which i narrowly scraped a 2:1 in) I had two modules out of seven which together covered the entirety of AS and A level mathematics, I struggled big time.

They've tweaked the course a little over the last few years. Now far more maths in the second year than there was in previous years for people on the Computer Science course and they've revamped the first year modules.

Overall I'd say the lecturers were very good. Always very approachable and happy to help out with things, lectures are on the whole interesting and I can't say I ever had a piece of coursework I'd describe as particularly dull either.

I don't think everything is as 'academic' as the very top unis (as already discussed in the thread), but I definitely don't regret taking this route. It's certainly not a dumbed down course at an ex-poly/college.

I know a couple of people who did the science foundation year. iirc they described it as A-Level science compacted into 1 year with a few more relevant things included. Seemed to set them up well, at least.

Sports park/LCR gigs are such an asset. Sports facilities are amazing and very affordable to use and the amount of good acts the LCR gets is impressive imo. It's the only 'big' venue in the area so attracts quite a few acts.

In my case - "lol, no".

Got a stinker of 50% in my 'best' subject (others 65-85%) and wasn't told why or allowed a remark, or allowed to see the transcript. Slightly annoying considering I was given last minute hints to people who ended up getting 70% on that exam! If I got a mere 60%, I would have got a first (amongst several other unbelievably frustrating events, including a viva examination where I was tested on stuff which wasn't even on the course.... cue the violins!).

I am never going to stop being bitter, especially with all my clever friends getting first class degrees this time around. ******** :p

but from a 3rd rate university :D
That was uncalled for.

:/ Imperial is a bit of a strange/wack uni to be honest, did you make many friends? The day I declined an offer from Imperial was great:D

I agree everyone I've ever met from Imperial is obsessed with status. They mostly go on about how they are glad they aren't at Oxbridge for some convoluted reason or another. This guy isn't doing much to help my impressions either.

Oh and got my result yesterday, 2:2, reasonably happy, just wanted the degree by the end. Got a broken leg though now so getting the damn thing is going to be a hassle.

need to decide what to do with my life now, was looking online and a lot of jobs say minimum 2:1.... does that mean i can't apply at all... or that i can apply but i probably wont get it

wouldnt worry too much I came out with a 2:2, sometimes excludes you from some grad schemes but I did o.k. and am enjoying having someone with a first from oxford working as my minion
