What are your Windows 'pet hates'?

Mine is only with Winows Seven. I hate the fact that you cannot use, Windows key + E to get to my computer. It now takes you to some stupid directory, documents I think. Sigh...:(

microsoft not providing a central 'update service' for 3rd party applications

Not sure why they should? Why should they use there bandwidth just to keep 3rd party apps up to date? What happens if a third-party releases a patch that gets pushed out and breaks something else? Whose fault would it be and who would fix it?

My current one is:

Windows 7: No classic start menu!

Having to download a third-party piece of software to get it to run is just stupid.

i'm using 7100 here, and Win + E takes me to My Computer :)

m4cc45,

they could easily make a template for 3rd party apps to use to fetch updates from their own sites

I'm sure many app writers would love the ability to do this, instead of the current mess that we have with all apps checking for updates on their own accord etc

If this is the best people got as far as things they hate about windows then I'd have to say it looks as if m$ is doing a good job. I recently switched to vista from xp, and have just been thrilled with how much better it is. Win7 sounds nice too but I only spend money on OS when I have to like new builds. I'd rather buy more hardware tbh. And Nvidia turned me completely off to the idea of anything "beta" :D

In windows 7, WLM doesn't sit in the systray like a good application, and its stacked all my chats into one little icon! I'm perfectly happy how it is in vista.

selecting all the contents in a folder no longer shows you the combined file size (vista onwards)

Are you sure?

What I find annoying are two identical machines, use the same media to install Windows, one might take all day and never work quite right, the other could be finshed in a couple of hours and be perfect.

Normally down to the DVD drive or the media. If the media is the same then it's usually the DVD drive. Swop the drives over to check.

msconfig and other non-resizable windows.

Agreed! That's the sort of thing I'm looking for.... seemingly unnecessary limitations rather than stability issues and stuff like that.

Just press Ctrl+C with the dialog box focused.

Thanks, that works for some dialogs, but not all situations where I might want to use it (e.g. if I want to copy some text out a control panel element).

My2 sons have 100% identical PCs. al;ways have and probably always will, and I use them as test machines, knowing that they are 100% identical, I can try out hardware X on one and then on the other and see the differences and throughout their lives, I have always had mixed reults... Never the same, so I fully agree with you.

Irritating issues for me:

1 - Ability to skip files when copying massive collections of files or even the inclusion of Yes or no to all might be useful sometimes.
When I copy massive collection of files I would like it to give me an option of skipping the files if they are older but say copying them if they are newer.

2 - Multi-coloured Directory listings for file types.
For example EXE/PRG files in RED, Documents in Blue and so on.

Sily but when you are used to them and have to thn do without, makes windows feel a bit ... Well, retro!
