I never really got into anime soundtracks in themselves, though some are quite catchy (the Vandread tunes spring to mind), but I'd happily listen to anything by Yoko Kanno or Kenji Kawai whether it was originally composed as an anime soundtrack or not.

Can some one recomend me a new series of Anime to watch?
I own all of 'Gungrave', awesome anime. I like 'Rune Soldier', and i realy enjoyed Death Note, but now i need a new anime to watch as ive seen all of these now :(
Im still working my way through one piece durring lunch breaks, but i want something with a lil more story lol, doesnt need too much, but if you've seen one piece i think we can agree it lacks anything.

Keep in mind i dont like ninjas and i realy dont like the ones where theres realy long pauses with no dialog, or at least no real noises e.g. ghost in the shell.
I know this is often down to dubbing, but i just cant take it, its like when you cant skip through dialog boxes in rpgs, you just want it to hurry up! ha.

:D:D

But seriously, sometimes I do wonder if I am too old be enjoying anime :p

Doubt it ... I'm probably older than quite a few people here and even my dad has some series he likes. In fact I probably didn't really start collecting until I was older than most people ...

Given the price of anime it's helps to be is a reasonably paying job particularly if you are getting anything from R2J, (woohoo my copy of Clannad After Story vol 8 LE has shipped!).

Is it just me or the the Cyber Punk and Mecha anime drying up??
Stelly

Their not really the flavour at the moment. There is normally at least one mecha series per year but the current trend is in slice-of-life anime.

But theres still Macross, Code Geass, Gundam, Zoids, Euraka, Gunparade, Nadeshico...

despotofmidnor - If you want a recommendation of a anime that NO-ONE can possibly hate then Full Metal Panic is normally good material for people starting out.

And if you want something to laugh yourself silly then Love Hina is very good.

Here's one for you - can someone recommend some widescreen sci-fi/horror/cyber anime? Getting alittle bored of watching square pictures on my plasma :)

I have all of GitS:SAC which iirc is widescreen, but always after more. I am watching the 4:3 stuff on my PC at work in lunchtimes so it's not going to waste, I just want some stuff to really show the TV at its best.

I use these behind a MediaPortal front end and they will scale anything to the aspect ratio you want.
Sounds good, but how does it avoid 'fat head syndrome' in taking a 4:3 and stretching it to 16:9 for example?

These sort of things come in cycles, as Sparky__H says at the moment the preferred genres are more at the slice of life / moe end of the spectrum but I expect that this will change again over the next couple of years, (partly because of the current crack down on some genres of Japanese games which means that the source material at the moe end will decrease).

The problem, I think, with Mecha anime is that they are immediately compared with Gundam, Eva and Rahxephon which makes it hard for a new series to stand out. Personally I haven't seen any of the former and found the latter two only meh.

Well The built in player for MP is customisable so you could up scale then crop the top and bottom. Just have a good mess about with the setting until your happy.

This is my customised front end to Mediaportal. Sorry it looks squashed I'm RDP'ing into the media box and it runs at a higher resolution then this one.

I'll give that a go, thanks for the suggestion :)

have a look on Anime Planet and see what recommendations it throws up based on what you like.

I want to suggest Solty Rei but I can't remember if it's widescreen or not ... to be honest I tend to just stretch most things to 16:9 anyway ...

Actually you might be surprised at how many 'new' anime (either this season or just finished) out there that are mecha (atleast in my view) -
azura cryin (also has demons)
kurogane no linebarrels
basquash
true mazinger (remake iirc)
vipers creed
rideback (pushing it a bit maybe but)
Legend of Daiku Maryu (remake of original)
code geass

You've also just had gundam00 season 2 plus the gurren lagann and eureka seven films.
Then you've got all the older ones, patlabor, rahxephon, eva, gundam (take your pick), overman king gainer, wings of rean, soukou no strain, Koutetsushin Jeeg, fmp, vandread, zegapain, zoids plus a load of others.

Cyberpunk, not so lucky really, you've got some 'darker' animes such as kurokami but theres no real cyberpunk like gantz, last exile etc. Although s-cry-ed, tales of the abyss (probably more steam punk though) and the bullets and carnage ova might just about pass as this topic.

Ironically - assuming you can split the genre's - gundam 00, eureka seven, kurogane no linebarrels and vandread are all available as widescreen :)
ergo proxy and gilgamesh are available as widescreen iirc

However most of the widescreen anime's I've seen are generally just a chopped version (unless new and made widescreen) of the notmal 4:3 ones, so as suggested just chop off the top and bottom of yours and move the subs :)

Just watched the Clannad: Kyou Chapter episode which was great.

To think it is the last ever clannad episode :(.

Fingers crossed for Tomoyo After or another of Keys visual novel adapations, they're just so good.

NO! The Tomoyo After story should NEVER be animated. It will have me blubbering like a little girl... its too soul destroying...

Arg it seems there's going to be yet another random filler arc in Bleach now :( Tis very dissapointing after such a good latest episode...

I've just been watching Yamato Nadeshiko Shichihenge, about halfway through it. The art is horrible, but the humour is just plain brilliant :D
