The end to the UK's new carriers?

People don't understand how much work is filtered down from these defense contracts.

Hell I imagine that pretty much every british fabrication company has done a little bit of work for the MoD.

You'd be surprised how many companies do not want MoD work. The tracability requirements alone are enough to put a lot of companies off.

Any company worth its salt would jump at the chance for MoD work, as normally it ticks over to more and more work.

But the margins are generally crap. By the time you factor the hidden costs of keeping tracability records for more than twice the usual period, the same applying to QA/Calibration/employee records and all manor of other things that would generally be kept for three to five years.
Just the cost and administration of route to source tracability of components and materials is enough to put your average UK company off.
While the work can be fairly regular for average companies there isn't enough money in it to off-set the hidden costs.

Never seen the hidden cost in my line tbh, just the benefits of the on going work.

If you want peace... first prepare for war...

The human race is still far too primitive for peace through any other means.

thats the biggest pile of crap i've ever read. Humans are FAR FAR more inteligent than is necessary to stop all war and fighting. WE can choose to, we have evolved far beyond the point where we have no language and fight based on instict and fight to survive a harsh world.

Theres entirely nothing stopping a single person on earth from simply deciding never to commit a crime, be involved in a war or anything inbetween, nothing at all.

People choose to go to war, for greed, for power, for money, for land, for whatever, every single war is started because someone CHOOSES to do so, its a concious choice and they could just as easily choose not to.

Nice contradiction there and shows why we need to maintain a heavy milliatry presence.
People want to go to war, people want power. Part of human traits. Therefore we need to prepare to defend ourselfs.

During the cold war, military tech had a life expectancy of 15-20 years because of the constant arms race. Now were flying Typhoons, Type 45 escort ships, two super carriers till 2045. By 2018 we should have all of these damn things built, does 1 billion really matter?

This will keep us sorted for an entire generation ....i mean really people!

Goverment politics creates massive delays and massive cost increases... Why is anyone surprised?

They cost too much, cancel the orders or put them on hold until the economy picks up and the budget deficit has been cleared.

Cancel/delay the orders for the new fighters that were going to be based on them while you're at it.

In 1968 Dennis Healey (Labour)cancelled orders for aircraft carriers and the associated aircraft. Why? The Labour government, convinced that a situation would never arise where there wasn't a friendly airfield capable of hosting British aircraft during a conflict,

New Labour = the same old lies:mad:

It'd be idiotic if we cut back futher on our defense capabilities. People are so quick to forget history. I mean, you've only got to look back over the last 50 years to see how war mad humans are.

Its not about "will" we enter another big war against a capable enemy, its about "when" it will happen.

You can be all about peace and love, and in an ideal world thats how it should be. But as a country you simply cannot risk it.

In the future its nice to think we'll all be grown up and live together in peace without suspicion or hatred, but until the world stops all the hand-bags and decides to get together and do something about Africa and the millions that die each day, it simply wont happen and I wont even entertain the idea of giving up our defense.
