The end to the UK's new carriers?

Why does everything always go over budget - surely this means that whoever is calculating the budgets is utterly useless and should be sacked?

The only way you could even attempt to get it accurate is too already have the bill of materials and procurement strategy in place. Which of course would mean it has to be already designed... which it hasnt.

I know the MT30 powerplant in the CVF was part of the now dropped US DDG programme so that may have bumped up the prices of the engines.

It'd be idiotic if we cut back futher on our defense capabilities. People are so quick to forget history. I mean, you've only got to look back over the last 50 years to see how war mad humans are.

Its not about "will" we enter another big war against a capable enemy, its about "when" it will happen.

You can be all about peace and love, and in an ideal world thats how it should be. But as a country you simply cannot risk it.

In the future its nice to think we'll all be grown up and live together in peace without suspicion or hatred, but until the world stops all the hand-bags and decides to get together and do something about Africa and the millions that die each day, it simply wont happen and I wont even entertain the idea of giving up our defense.

out of intrest what has Africa got to do with anything? i don't they are much of a threat to us :p

It was in relation to the posts about humans being more peaceful and caring now in the modern world and how we dont need to spend on defense.

Until the world sorts the Africa mess out and countries put themselves second, then I'm not willing to take the risk :p

I used to be a supporter of Trident and its replacement, but I'm not convinced now. Can anyone envisage us using nuclear weapons unilaterally, without the support of the United States?

Piracy is a real threat to Britain's interests and why we need a navy. Two out of the three global hotspots for piracy are off the coast of Africa, Nigeria and Somalia to be specific.

Don't be daft they are a deterent and Also can
help give humanitarian aid :)

Good idea, the country's bankrupt, record numbers out of work, record numbers financially destitute, reposessed and homeless, failing NHS, record crime and you think we should be helping other countries?!

When we have sorted ourselves out then perhaps, until then no.

Trident CANNOT be used without the approval of the US. They need to supply authorisation codes apparantly.

This has to be an urban myth.

Alliances change, countrys change. American support myight stop, we might want to break rank with tyhem.
We need our own nukes. As long as they exist in the world. Unless everyone disarms and we can be 100% sure none exist. But that's not goign to happen.

Which is why I hate The Campaign for Nuclear dissarmanent. They want to get rid of nukes, while other o****ruys have them, especially with rogues states having or trying to get them. Once you lose nuclear deterrent you can be blackmailed.

I've never read anything about needing authorisation codes. The D5 missiles used are leased from the Americans but they never indicated we'd be unable to use them without their consent, as that would be fairly ridiculous.

But as I said, can anyone imagine us launching them without the US leading a strike? Who would we use them against, and why would we have cause for launching without the support of the yanks?

*Sigh*

N00b :p

Look at your article, it never says we cannot fire the missile just that they are highly dependant on the US tracking, GPS, targetting system.

They do not control the missile launch codes.

So please wind your internet neck in.
