Edinburgh zoo

I went about 2weeks ago. Edinburgh Uni have set up an exhibition to study monkeys and chimps so you can go watch the experiments. I saw a monkey using a stick to get honey from a pot.
They also have a decent amount of shows going on throughout the day. Such as a falconry type show showing off a few birds and of course the penguin parade.
They recently set up a koala enclosure too.
There are a lot of empty ish enclosurers just now because the new animals are in quarantene for rabies because they have just been shipped over. The polar bear is now in Inverness.
We are getting pandas next year too.

If you were there two weeks ago then you'd know Mercedes the polar bear is still there because they haven't secured all the funding for her new enclosure in Aviemore yet. The crate is there to take her so she can get used to it but she's not moving until later on in the year.

I love it there. I think it's pretty good as far as zoo's go in the UK. Look out for Chumbee the Koala, he's cool, if you catch him awake that is.

Chumbee isn't there any more, think he moved to Vienna. They've got Yabbra and Goonaroo now. It's best to go and see the koalas at 3pm when they do the talk on them because if the weather is nice they'll take one outside and do the talk there, or if it's raining they'll put food in their enclosures and you'll at least see them active since they spend so long sleeping each day.

Edinburgh Zoo seems to be spending most of its money on the primates at the moment because they seem to have pretty large areas in comparison to the other animals. There's a lemur walk through which is cool if the lemurs are out and about in it because you get up close to them.

My bad, Mercedes wasnt in the enclosure when I was there, and I had read in the paper ages ago that it was moving :P

if you want to go a proper zoo then goto somewhere like chester zoo the size of the place more than makes up for the traveling time, edinburgh zoo could probably fit inside chester zoo 3-4 times.

Not even 1 and a half times :p

Edinburgh Zoo = 82 acres
Chester Zoo = 110 acres

But considering your dislike for hills, you probably missed most of it!

when i went to edinburgh zoo around a year ago during the summer half of the enclosures didnt even apear to have any animals and the polar bear looked like it just wanted to die, actually the few animals we did see didnt look very happy and the park seemed underfunded massively.

goto chester zoo and you can tell the animals are properly looked after and they have more than enough money to run a zoo properly

I believe that Edinburgh Zoo has been trying to relocate the polar bear for many years, but there have been reasons why she couldn't be moved. I forget exactly why she's been unable to be relocated so far, but it's just been an unfortunate case. As mentioned by someone else already, there are plans to relocate her by the end of the year.

Most of the animals in Edinburgh Zoo are kept in as good conditions as you could find anywhere else.

lies longleat , chester zoo etc make edinburgh look like its ran by ****** :p

I've been to all 3 and I can't say I agree.

Edinburgh Zoo has undergone a lot of redevelopement and expansion in recent years and most of the enclosures are far more suited to the animals than they perhaps were in the past.

Most of the big cat area could still do with a change, as the small enclosures with glass windows are far from ideal for such animals. But changes are being made and there is now a much bigger lion enclosure up at the top of the park.

The 4-acre enclosure for Mercedes is planned to be ready for August. I'm going to the Highland Wildlife Park again on Saturday, haven't seen the tiger cubs yet :D

Been to Edinburgh a few times in the last couple of years, it's a decent way to pass the time.
Feeding crazed bitey birds pots of nectar is always a good laugh. As is watching their attempts to steal people jewellery...
Monkeys are a good laugh aswell.

The polar bear was awesome, did it not recently have a cub or was that somewhere else.
The meerkats were great fun too.
Rockhopper penguins look evil.

And that pygmy pig/elephant thing that looks like a watermelon with legs looked rather strange.

Been a few times, think its been a coupla years since I was last there tho.

Anybody know if there is a taxi rank at Edinburgh Haymarket? and if so a rough price to the zoo?

Haymarket has the train station so I assume there will be taxis there a lot. Approx price is around £15 max. Probably less.

Aye, it's the train station I meant, I should have been a bit clearer

£15 oof

I think there is. Price i couldn't tell you but its only about 2 miles along the road from there so can't see it being too much

From Haymarket to the Zoo will only be about £7. Most buses from there will stop at the Zoo as well. ;)

Edit: There's definitely a taxi rank at Haymarket. Forgot to mention that.

It costs less than £15 to get from the Playhouse to the bypass end of Calder Road and that's more than double the distance!

If you're driving up from Cumbria then take the M80 instead of M8 and head to Blairdrummond Safari Park. The drive-through enclosures are pretty pants, but the falconry, sea lion show, chimp island, baby rhino, tigers, petting zoo etc are all good. I'd choose Blairdrummond before Edinburgh Zoo any day.

I can't see it being any more than £5 in a taxi from the station to the zoo.

Thats sounds a bit more reasonable

I'll be on the train otherwise I may have considered Blairdrummond
