Police dogs die in parked vehicle

What sort of idiot, police officer or not, leaves two dogs sweltering in a parked vehicle with the weather as it is currently.

Depends entirely on circumstance.

What if, for example the officer responsible for the dogs pulled up at the station with them in the back, then as soon as he got out of the vehicle noticed a colleague struggling with a crim. He immediately went over to assist and in the struggle recieved a blow to the head and was knocked unconscious. An ambulance was called and he was sent off to hospital. In the middle of all this going on no-one else had the presence of mind to remember that his dogs were still in the van.

Still think the guy should be locked up once he wakes up in hospital and has the news broken to him that his companions are dead? This in entirely why an incident like this should be investigated before conclusions are drawn.

Two police dogs have died in a hot vehicle parked outside the headquarters of Nottinghamshire Police.

If it wasn't a Police officer, the story would be 10x larger =x - they obviously didn't care for the dogs at all.... :(

Yeah, sad really..... :(

There is a lot of the normal "stupid police, but they don't get punished as tehre is one rule for us and another for them" rubbish in this thread.

Dog vans can be left switched on with no keys in, to keep the air con and fans going when the handler is not there. Could be that this mechanism broke.

I doubt the handler 'forgot' about his dogs

That is/was my thought when I heard about it - IIRC all dedicated dog vans/cars in the police these days are specially adapted to allow that (extra batteries/different wiring for the air conditioning).
The question is, was the van properly maintained if the dogs were in one.

The handler is probably feeling like **** at the moment if it was a mechanical malfunction, as they do get extremely attatched to the dogs.

If it wasn't he's likely to face prosecutions, disciplinary proceedings, and booted out of the unit if not the job (it's already being investigated by the IPCC and RSPCA from what i've heard).

Whatever else, it's pretty sad and not a good way to go :(

They should be not allowed to be dog handlers (lose their job?) and not own a dog again. This would be the same for anyone else

The Facts !!!

The dogs were left in his own car Not a dedicated dog van with air con to the back.
It was his day off & he just popped into the station.
It only takes 20 minutes to kill a dog that's locked in a car.

I'll wait to here the rest of the facts before I pass judgement as there are far to many things that could have happened during that critical 20 minutes.
One thing I will say is Dog handlers Love there dogs & this guy will be torn apart inside about this.
Of course if there is neglect then throw the book at him but lets wait to here the facts before we condemn the dude.

Gutted about the dogs though. :(

Most niave comment I've read in a while...

Very sad indeed but undoubtedly just a tragic mistake... believe it or not we all make them, so think before you jump on the police hating wagon.
