**Summer Transfer Thread: News, Rumours and Speculation**

Thats the whole point - without Ronaldo the midfield area will get BETTER, we may well score less Im not disputing that, but the midfield will work better and together rather all being focused around a stroppy and arrogant so and so who liked diving WAY too much

Do you truly believe that? I think that's a bit optimistic.

I've heard people say Man Utd will be better without Ronaldo and thats just rubbish...

If they don't get 2 really good players, they will definitely struggle to win the league, not saying they won't but it will be much closer and harder.

Shame they missed out on Benzema... I think thats just typical Madrid bet they are loving they stole the deal....

Wonder if Madrid go in for Ribery, what a midfield they will have, unreal

Actually, I'd very much dispute that. We scored 68 league goals last year, which is one of the lowest total GF records we've had since the PL started. I think I'd back the squad as it stands today to beat that tally.

Really? Who played well from your midfield over the course of last season? Vidic was your player of the year and if it wasn't for that run of clean sheets and 1 - 0's then you probably wouldn't have won the league. Your midfield lacked creativity, fluency, speed and venom which it had bags of in 07-08

Not at all, but I do agree with your comment above.

Spot on, for all their individual brilliance Real even if they manage to get Alonso still wont have the players to hold and pass the ball the quality of Xavi, Iniesta and even Toure and as I said previously if there's no one in their midfield to win and pass the ball then no service for Ronaldo, Kaka and co to score the goals

Dont get me wrong I'm not saying Madrid are going to fail completely I just dont think they'll do any better than they did this past year, they'll still be found out when it comes to a 38 game league season and they're without a doubt be found out in the latter stages of the Champions League

Alonso is a great passer of the ball and Diarra has slotted in very well, and is fine for breaking up the play.

On Anderson not that I would have a problem with him being a regular next season there's nothing to suggest at the moment he'll be ahead of Carrick, Fletcher, Scholes & if fit Hargreaves

Carrick is first choice, Scholes shouldn't be first choice now as the pace of Prem football is past him IMO, Hargreaves has many question marks over him regarding fitness, leaving Fletcher and Anderson, neither of whom are good enough to be first choice.

There's no cover in that midfield at all. There needs to be a quality player come in, and those two be cover for him and Carrick.

Hate to say it but I agree with jakeke on our midfield. We relied on a solid defence and goals from ronaldo too much. We had a big scare for a good few games once we broke the clean sheet record; we were letting in too many and not scoring enough.

Id like to see us get another midfileder for the right hand side but I think that a midfield of :

valencia - carrick - hargreaves - anderson

would be fine.

The trouble is, I cant remember the last time we played without ronaldo so its hard to know how we will do until we try. Anderson seems good at distributing the ball for the most part and his running into space is good. He needs to play better killer balls and learn how to cross. I have seen some games that he has tried loads of crosses and hit the defender every time.

Nani hasnt impressed at all for me. Get rid of him and get a replacement. The tricky job we have is deciding who to buy. If hargreaves is fit we will be fine, if hes not then we are looking a little thin in the middle of the pitch.

I personally think that is down to Mike Phelan's approach last year... we all know Fergie isn't a master tactician but is great for motivation and getting the best of his players.

When we had Queiroz as assistant manager we played some lovely football week in week out, some of our performances last year were pretty lacklustre.

Looks like Arsenal might be in the market for another central defender, with all the rumours over our current ones leaving:

"Naldo is a great athlete and could do well at the right club, unfortunately he doesn't fit the direction we're planning to move in any longer.

"We expect to move him for somewhere in the region of €10 million, and English side Arsenal is as of now the most likely destination."

He's 6ft5 \o/ No more midget defenders for us if we get him.

Giggs is good enough for maybe a dozen games in central midfield (even if its against lower table opponants), the way Fletcher took Chelsea apart shows that given the right encouragement he can be quality even if it isnt week in, week out

It would be great to get in one (or two) experienced midfielders, especially one who could break up play and drive the team forward like OH, I would just feel bad for OH as that would sign his exit from the club even if it wasnt immediate

edit - Loki, Im sure Gibson is still transfer listed isnt he, or was that a viscious rumour?

Vicious rumour, he's got one more year on his current contract and SAF has gone on record saying he's the nearest of the second string to get starting birth

Erm Carrick! His game came on loads last season especially as he was able to come out from Scholes' shadow as the pair very seldom played together. 11 assists in all comps and 4 goals aint bad for creativity IMO

I agree with him, look back to the summer of 2006 - we'd just lost Roy Keane and sold Van Nistelrooy and the only player who came in was Carrick and we ended up that season playing the best football we had for years and 2 years on many of us United fans agree that was still the best football this particular United team has played despite 2 more league titles and a Champions League coming since then

Against the top teams in Europe you're suggesting Diarra is good enough? No. No he isn't.

Yet they are and we've done fine. Funny that.

Kinda goes hand in hand with my previous comment that I dont agree with that, we've got plenty of strength in depth in our midfield

Fair enough, I think that there needs to be some buys though, what happens if Carrick gets a 3 month injury etc? Can't see enough strength in depth for Man Utd's standards.
