XBox 360, How to get a quiet one?

I was offered a borked 360 the other day quiet cheap. Thought about getting an X-clamp kit and fixing it. Installing games to HDD would be great but are there any quieter fans which can be bought for it to make it quieter?
Try the Talismoon Whisper Max. I fitted one to mine last week. Its a little quieter than the stock Deltas (around 2-3db) and makes a rasping sound with little mechanical clicks now and again as it uses rifle bearings I believe. Most Deltas make a very loud whining sound when the RPM increases with the heat of the GPU. Whisper Max also has 3 different colour LEDs (Blue is installed as std but you can mod to Green or Red as they include the LEDs to do this easily). Also cut away the plastic & metal fan grills at the back to increase the air flow a little (not much but every little helps!!).

Problem with 360s is that you really need a high RPM high CFM 70mm dual fan to fit into the space the stock one goes and getting it powerful enough is impossible with low noise.

I tried dual 80mm silent fans yesterday but it overheated as they do not extract the heat quickly enough as they are outside the case 4cm away from the original fans mounting point so had to put the Whisper Max back in. Putting your 360 into a desk cupboard is also possible but unless you ventilate the space with cool airflow your 360 will get hotter as it will heat up with the hot air being retained in the cupboard. I tried this as well and found you have to use some sound deadening material inside the cupboard otherwise the fan noise can sound worse as it amplifies the noise more and the fan RPM increases as it gets hotter.

Lian Li XB01 case will be almost silent as it comes with a 120mm fan and you can mod it with more fans but its around £80 + P&P so quite expensive.

Got an 360 a few weeks ago, Jasper board and lite-on drive, so quiet i have to put my head to it to hear if it's doing anything. Bought a second hand 120gig HD that was off an Elite, that thing makes more noise than the fans do!:D

I got an xbox elite with a falcon chipset on IDLE or when I play a game off of the hard drive it is very quiet. Not as quiet as my rig though I went out and got silenced components.

I don't know about other chipsets but the falcon is pretty damn quiet.

Your deaf.

They are loud.

im with you on this one, must have been in the company of maybe 20 xbox 360s now since the release date and ALL of them have been painfully noisy, the only way to get a silent xbox 360 (this is the god honest truth) is with a hammer of somekind, preferably a sledge and some elbow grease, that'll shut it up

yeah my xbox 60gig is loud - new at xmas - its ok when you install games of course - except the ones where installation makes them perform worse!

Mine is so loud that it makes my ears ring ! Irritates the 'beep' out of me..

And it's AN annoying noise like a vibration right to your nerves kind of sound.

How many sold? What 20 odd mil ? 20 odd mil people shouldn't have to change fans, or shell out 80quid just to shut the damn thing up.. It should have been designed properly in the first place.. ok say they messed up.. Then they should have given us a V2 silent without the RROD problem after the 1st yr... But my understanding is that they are still RROD'ing away as well as still being as noisy as heck ! Something they should have fixed A LONG TIME AGO...

If it aggravates you that much, why do you even bother to play on it?

Surely you could play just about all of the games in PS3 form instead, bar a couple of exclusives that come along a couple of times a year.

that sounds familiar, soon as i chuck a disk in its like 'prepare for take-off...over' the thing is, when you talk to people about it they think your taking the mick! lol

Just an update I modded mine again to take 2 x 70mm Akasa fans with built in heat sensors. These go to 6K RPM and scream a bit but are still slightly less noisy than the stock Delta's. I am now doing the thermal paste replacement to see if it makes any difference as mine is nearly 3 years old and in the winter its silent with 2 x 80mm Akasa Amber fans hanging on the back but these are not strong enough for the current warmer weather so I got the 70mm to try but want to reduce the noise as the thermal sensors are making it go full whack all the time unless on the dash only when they are silent:

My take on it is to buy it from a high street store and take it back right away if the fans are too noisy. If you can hear noisy fans above the level of a movie then it's a fault as far as I'm concerned.

My Elite is silent.

You got any pics?

nudes etc?

I've never come across a silent 360 - and I've seen a LOT in my time.

Compared to the majority of other AV equipment and consoles, the 360 is noisy.

That said, not everyone is bothered by the noise or notices it that much, hence why you get varying anecdotal evidence with people claiming their unit is "noisy" while others claim theirs is "quiet". They're all probably quite similar (aside from the differing fan/drive manufacturers which has some bearing on noise). One man's "noisy" is another man's "quiet".

I'm a bit baffled by the poster above that is annoyed enough by the noise to stop using it for games, yet will happily use it as a DVD player. Wierd one that. On the whole, the noise is bearable for me when I'm playing games; but I'd never use it as an entertainment centre.

If anyone is really concerned about the noise, I'd suggest looking to see if the power supply itself is 'whiring/whining'. I've encountered a couple of units where this was the case (with the PSU being the main source of noise) when it should be fairly inaudible unless you hold your ear up to it. If that's the case, report it as faulty with MS and they'll usually send a replacement PSU without the need for you to send your existing one back.

WHY OH WHY is it a problem for people with noise. I **** myself laughing when people say about noise. Have you never heard of volume on your tv or surround sound?

I install my games on my Elite, have surround sound on at a nice level and never ever noticed the 360 noise!

If you need to turn the tv volume down at night because other people are in bed,it's very hard to do so when the 360 is so loud.

As for the OP - get yourself a 120GB hard drive, install games to the hard drive and the 360 is so much quieter. It's really just the DVD drive that makes the noise.

The only way i could get my 360 to be quieter is to stick it into one of those lian li 360 cases but even when the fans go full speed even it still isnt silent it is however much improved and runs cool.

I am using 1 Scythe Kaze Jyuni 1200RPM Slip Stream 120mm Fan and 1 Scythe Kaze Jyu SLIM 100mm fan over the cpu/gpu instead of the supplyed lian li fans.

I have tryed different fans in the back of the 360 case but it didnt really make much difference.

Latest Jaspers are pretty quiet now. Few on youtube compared to the older 360's. Jasper is a big improvement. Also you can now buy a 360 with the lian-li casemod already done as well as other fan mods so its totally silent. You need to search as you are not allowed to put competitor links here. But there prices are a joke around £377 for an Elite in modded silent case with full warranty from the case modder company.

I have a 120GB HD now and still my 360 whines as no easy way to use existing case and powerful enough fans to cool it all year round do not exist. I have tried 2 x 80mm which is silent in winter only the summer air temps mean they last all of 2 mins gaming. 2 x 70mm are better than stock Delta's by around 10db but I need to get an xclamp repair kit and see if that reduces the noise a little by producing less heat now as 6000RM from 70mm fans is still annoying

Ill film it if you like, after the first 10 seconds its virtually silent playing a dvd.

Playing a game makes my ears bleed.

I suppose it makes sense, because the cooling fans aren't working as the graphics card isn't being stressed; and the drive should just be ticking over at DVD bitrate rather than being thrashed.
