Do you have a smoke alarm?

2 Kidde combined smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, 1 upstairs and 1 downstairs. First thing I put it when we moved into the house. So easy to fit and could possibly save your life.

We have many in our student place, however it didn't go off when someone burnt something in the kitchen leaving a thick gray smog in there, which is worrying but not as worrying as the lead architect saying that our foundations aren't that great.

Might be a heat detector?

Have 3. All mains powered with battery back up.

Although we also had a heat detector as well - that has been removed as the person designing the layout of the flat decided that the best place for one of them is...

... in the kitchen above the oven!

What kind of retard comes up with that as a good idea?

We have two in a one bedroom flat. My dad is a bit over the top with these things and probably would have put in another two if I'd let him!

One at each end of the main hallway of our flat (it's a 3 bed flat, so the hall is quite long)

Such a cheap expense for something so very effective.

Our kitchen door is also a fire door and we have a fire blanket in there. That said, while the kitchen door auto closes like a fire door should, we always have it wedged open. :p

We also have a CO2 extinguisher in the server room, not that it's been serviced in a while... or like, ever.

We take more precautions than most people, and probably less than we should. :D
