**Summer Transfer Thread: News, Rumours and Speculation**

Would love it if the Eto'o thing came off, the Costa one has been around all summer so I can see that happening, Young? Nah lazy journalism IMO

United did not bid for Torres, thats a concrete fact, it would only lead to embarrassment if they did, and you can be sure there would be a lot more fuss about it than a throwaway line.
As for Eto'o and Costa, that will do, make it so.

I don't think Newcastle ever bid for him either tbh. He was the back up plan if the Owen bid didn't come off, so once we paid £17m for Owen I can't see us bidding a similar amount for Torres a few months later.

Firstly that's not Torres' official site, not that he'd put details of transfer bids on there anyway.

Anyway, Utd enquired about him several times, whether a formal offer was actually tabled only Atletico and Utd know but iirc you claimed that Utd never wanted him.

Im not sure who you are to be privy to details of Utd's transfer details though :p

edit: you also claimed Utd didn't want Berbatov and it was all paper talk :D

But you are about liverpools? and about their wage structure? and almost everything else?
You have the authority to speak on all things liverpool, but I cant talk about united.
Thats not awfully fair.

;)

As for Berbatov, the Club did not inquire about him after his first season as the papers said, and when it was rumored they were in for him, I said he was a pointless signing, and nothing else.

I give my opinion, you seem to claim things as fact :p

edit: anyway, i was only messing around. I doubt very much Utd, Chelsea or City made a formal offer for Torres this summer. Whether some kind of enquiries were made, only they know.

Whether United want Torres or not - one thing can be guaranteed and that is that no offer was made.

I can say this because SAF (and everyone else) knows that Benitez's response to an offer for one of his two best players from his biggest rivals would no doubt be "**** OFF" in 72-point Arial. :p

With outside investment and with the money in the game these days, it's getting more and more likely that these rivalries may get forgotten.

Thats entirely possible tbh. There is a new thing to hate and loathe and create rivalry and thats the massive multimillionaire investment teams. Lets face it, before Abramovich got involved at Chelsea, there wasnt much widespread disdain for Chelsea. It was the involvement of Abramovich and the billions which created additional hatred towards the team from a wider audience. Folks wanting to see them fail for the money spent.

We are beginning to see a similar dislike of Man City, for much the same reasons I think.

Despite everyones differences, I do think that a lot of people unify in wanting to see clubs fail when a massive investor comes in and thinks the answer to everything is to throw money about and buy people at 4x the "normal" cost.

Of course, in this particular area there is a shiny "new" kid on the block and thats Real Madrid. I'll wager that I'm not the only person who is really wanting to see them fall flat on their face this season.

Maybe clubs are recognising that trend too? Apparantly Arsenal's chairman rejected offers from the largest shareholder (a Uzbekistani billionaire) to flood the club with money for transfers, preferring to keep the club operating within its means.

Not sure how'd Arsefans'd feel about that though... :D

Was sat next to a 16 year old triallist for Man U from Jordan on the flight back from London to Manchester today. Said he was on a weeks trial with them.

Was so so tempting to step on his foot.
