As the title says really, I've got a craving for a good management game, not a combat RTS.

I tried Sid Meiers Railroads demo earlier and quite enjoyed it, but was wondering if there was anything else out there worth trying, preferable on Steam, since it would save me a trip into town :p

Anno games ( 1701 and 1404). ( has combat in but small part of the game)
Railroad Tycoon 2&3
Caesar 3 or Pharaoh ( both have minor combat it but don't focus on it, combat makes up a very tiny portion of the game, you only occasionally have to defend your city in some scenario's. Pharaoh is the more refined of the 2 but if you like romans then by all means pick C3 above it as both are superb games and very much alike)
Openttd if you don't mind 16bit old graphics.
Rollercoaster tycoon ( recommend 1 over 2, because 2 might be a problem to run windowed and that's really a must imo with WS monitors).
Sim city 4 Deluxe ( + mods., though it runs terribly and is quite steep to learn for some).

The sims? /runs

OpenTTD is an amazing game, I've been with that series (well, it started out as Transport Tycoon from Microprose for DOS, followed by Transport Tycoon Deluxe for DOS then for Windows) since about 1996.

The Settlers 1-4 are also very good management games IMO, however you do have to start fighting after 2-3 hours.

I have to admit I love management games as well, I'll probably watch this thread. :)

Rollercoaster Tycoon 3? It's not half as bad as some people say, it's very pretty, runs at whatever res you want and there's tons of free DLC on the tinterweb.

Railroads is ok, gets a bit samey after a while but it's a welcome diversion. Anno 1404 (as mentioned above) can be a real sandbox city building game, resource management etc. you can avoid combat for most of the game as far as i've been able to make out.

im going to say Pharaoh...my no1 game of choice when i get bored.

Love the game - also don't forget about Zeus and its expansion Poseidon, which focusses on the Greek civ.

If you want a more updated looking (and my personal favourite) then get Emperor: Rise of the Middle Kingdom which focusses on the Chinese empire.

After these then they all went 3D, wish they would make a new isometric city management game!

Think I might give Anno 1404 a try, but quick question, has any1 tried Hospital Tycoon? I was a big fan of Theme Hospital :D

For the love of God, Allah, Buddha, whatever NNNNOOOOOO!!!!!!!

I guarantee you will put your fist through the screen after 5 minutes tops with the stupid Sims-esque voices and the doesn't matter where you want to put a room/piece of equipment the cpu will move it for you gameplay.....

Port Royale 2.

Don't think it's on steam, but it's available via dd on the other place drm free.

It is on steam, but the problem is that it ''lacks'' something late ingame. Don't get me wrong it's very addicting but it should have been more polished imo.
