Windows 7 hits RC stage Build 7100

Running 7600 on my desktop with no problems

Hi,

Could you confirm if it asks for what version you want to install and at what point it asks dude? This will help me in knowing if I can install this as it's pretty much confirmed final RTM then when my retail version arrives just update with the retail product key and BAM no reinstall needed :)

Still worth keeping it open IMHO, lots of people will want to keep running the 7100 version as it's free until 2010.

even with RTM out, I am still using 7100...I don't see the point in changing yet until the final release...especially with pre-order day two days away :D

I just want it to be done. I don't want to feel like I'm going back a step switching to an OS that doesn't have good driver support. But at the same time, I could really benefit from going to a 30gb os to a 13gb os as I have a 60gb ssd. What to do, what to do? I have every build except for the rtm. Can't decide which if any to install or to just wait. Any suggestions?

No it does not ask what version you want.

Hmm thanks,

What are teh chances if I install this then as it seems to be Ultimate that when I get my pro version that I can activate this with that key and it simply defaults to Pro version like how a Vista DVD will default to whatever version the key you install it with corresponds to ?

Guys it cant be rtm,

RTM will allow you to chose which version your installing, like vista does at the moment. This is on the RTM branch, but not final yet.

It would be odd for this to be RTM with no choice of os at install ;)

Ah yes that's a point actually, doesn't Vista Ultimate ask you what version to install if you're just evaluating it too?

Have found this:

If Microsoft follows past practice, it will probably offer Windows 7's final code to paying subscribers of its MSDN and TechNet services on July 13 or shortly after. In 2006 Microsoft announced Vista's RTM on Nov. 8, and posted downloads to subscribers on Nov. 16. But it's unlikely Microsoft will withhold Windows 7 from MSDN and TechNet for long; when it tried to do that in early 2008 with Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1), subscribers revolted, calling the decision "boneheaded" and "the lamest since Microsoft Bob," the latter a reference to a ridiculed interface that debuted in 1995.

Perhaps it just installs Ultimate until given a specific key and then falls back if necessary, that would certainly be more convenient than having to select the correct version during initial install.

I was hoping to do this too. It installs Ultimate by default as that's what it's configuration file is telling it to do. If you delete the ei.cfg file from the sources folder it will let you choose which version to install... but it doesn't list the 'E' versions so no idea if it would let you use a key from a UK retail version. (assuming this is the final RTM).

Sure does. Both my Vista Ultimate disks (32bit & 64bit) ask if you dont enter a key what version you have purchased. So i feel this is not the RTM were waiting for.

As for Windows 7 being made available on technet/msdn and such today. Not going to happen. I have heard from reading around it will be around the 1st of sept :( so still a bit of a wait I think
