whats your resting heart rate?

AFAIK INdurain(Tour de France pro/winner a bunch of times) had a sick resting heart rate of around 30 and was reportedly one of the lowest ever.

According to Wiki it was as low as 28bpm, and he had ridiculous blood pumping and lung capacity to go with it.

How does max heart rate relate to fitness?

My resting heart rate was about 56ish last time I measured it but it can go up to 190 when cycling hard although I can sustain that for 30 mins or more.

It doesn't but it does allow you to formulate your training, if you train by heart rate zones, and are looking to increase your fitness.

I'd be interested in how the majority are measuring their resting heart rate or having it measured. I had a group 'measure' their resting heart rates once, most under estimated by between 6-9 bpm, most measured for 15 secs and multiplied by four. As people think it's good to have a low resting HR they see it as a competition and feel it ok to ingnore the odd beat at the start/end ;)

To measure properly you need to lie down for at least 20 mins, measure HR. Do this over several days and average. So going somewhere to have you HR measured seems somewhat odd to me.

Just done mine at work - 55bbpm (counted over 5 mins sat at my desk).

But I'm 16st, bmi of 31 and slightly high blood pressure - slow resting heart rate does not mean you're healthy.

I have a heart rate monitor, but I get around the same readings taking my pulse. As I said, resting HR is in the 50s (Edit: Just tested at desk for a minute - 54 - it's been a good while since I tried in bed first thing in the morning though).

I seem to have an unusually wide hart rate range. I did a sprint finish to a 1 1/2 mile hilly run a few months ago. Checked my HR monitor afterwards and the max I'd reached was 215. I'm 29. HRMax is supposed to be about 220 minus your age (or various other guide formulae, depending who you ask). Not sure it's healthy for me to max out like that. I generally try to keep it below 170 when training.

70.

All depends how you sit, temperature, lying down the heart doesn't have to work as hard. Sitting up it will beat faster. As well as if you have any points on your body with pressure like arm rests etc can increase it ever so slightly.

i cant feel mine....!

Tried using your wrist with your thumb? should get a nice pulse there, just if you ever need to check someone else, use your middle/index finger as you'll be taking your own:p

Based on those figures you'll only ever be in your aerobic zone whilst training which won't help improve performance if you run.

Everyone is different though, my resting heart rate is about 55-60, im 17 stone and work out 4 or 5 times a week, my max heart rate is 150 going flat out sprinting, never goes more than 2 or 3 more than that, while my wife's working out at a lower level to me, her heart is sitting around 170-180 (she's 39, im 36).

That's what I said 220-age is roughly peak, it's a general calculation. However, your hear rate in relation to your peak does govern what kind of workout you are doing.

I went for a V1 health check at my local Gym (it was free  ), the person taking the test asked me if I was asleep when my resting heart rate was taken!.. it was 48  she told me 62-68 is about average!..

I was very surprised for a bloke who's 19 stone of Blubber, my resting heart rate is veeery low, my cholesterol is 'Spot On', even my blood pressure is average!!.. the only thing was my BMI said I was 'A Fat Ba... I mean Morbidly Obese!' but she said BMI is a load of crap and ignore it as it'd still say I was obese if I was 16 stone!!.. :D

Well like you, I'm a large one. 6 foot 1 and just over 18 stone. My BMI must be about 33 or something. It's not nearly all muscle either, as a quick look in the mirror reminds me.

Having said that, I'm a lot fitter than I was. I'm down from 19 1/2 stone a few years ago. No idea what resting heart rate was back then. I know it was 80 plus, when I was the chubby inactive kid in school. I think carrying this much weight makes me rather injury prone (hamstrings particularly) though. Not good for football, although it is quite satisfying to sprint past people who aren't expecting anything this big to move that fast...

Edit: Blood pressure now fine (it wasn't when I was bigger). Never had a cholesterol test though.
