Golf MkIV V6 4motion would be my recommendation. Not cheap to run but good fun (for a Golf).

Celica T-Sport, reliable, looks good, 4 seats (backs don't have great amounts of head/legroom but enough for short journeys). VVTLI works like vtec so is pretty frugal when kept under 6.2k revs and fun over that

Oh and if you get a red one like I have, small kids and girls think its a Ferrari

You would need 5k to pay the road tax alone!

Cheers for all the replies.

After talking to him he's not keen on the Clio, mainly due to the size.

Budget could scrape to 6K (not sure if that helps a a lot)

He's going to look at an Astra GSi (Mk4 Turbo) which was my idea (flame suit on) It's just short of 5K and 200BHP out of the box. Not the best but fairly good on fuel and nippy.

If he is looking at covering 20k a year i would stay clear of the ST170, i got rid of mine after just one year as i found it very uneconomical, yes it has a bit of a punch behind it, but stay close to a petrol station at all times.

I traded the ST170 in for a Fabia vRS not long ago and have not looked back, yes the Fabia vRS does not have the same punch behind it as the Fabia vRS unmapped is only 130bhp as apposed to the 170bhp, but i can drive the vRS like i stole it and still average around 400 miles for £35 worth of diesel, and is still a fun and comfortable car to drive, and good value for money.

id tend to agree for what you want - Fabia VRS or leon 2.0 tdi or something if you can get one in this price range!
