**Summer Transfer Thread: News, Rumours and Speculation**

Hmm...when I look at how many games he has played each season for the past several years I'm somewhat concerned over how he would handle the gruelling amount of games in a typical english season.

As a rotating player it might work out, but as a straight replacement for Alonso and the number of games that person would be expected to play in...I am not so sure.

(then again, to be honest I am always dubious about players from the italian leagues in the english leagues. I always worry about the difference in games)

Platt was better than Scholes? No chance.

Yes, I think he was - in his pomp, he was one of the best, if not the best attacking midfielders in Europe.

His last season at the Villa, after he starred at the World Cup 90', he kept us up single handedly with 18 goals from midfield, scored consistently at international level, and did the business in Italy for 3 clubs.

People have a clouded view of him as his spell at Arsenal, and latterly Forest, were very poor.

As a Villa fan, very disillusioned by Stewart Downing - MON's obsession with home grown players is clouding his judgement -it's time he looked away from these shores.

Disappointed - Downing is very, very average.

I know you guys don't like ITK but the source of this one has been verified genuine apparently:

I've just been told that we will be signing Ashley Young within the week in a swap deal involving Bentley plus cash. Apparently Bentley will not turn out at Exeter tonight.

That's been bandied about before in the press - I can't see Ashley going anywhere but a club bigger than Villa, and Spurs don't fit the bill.

The only way this would happen was if we got Jenas and Bent thrown into the deal.

I doubt we'll sell Jenas anytime soon tbh. He's been a good servant to the club.... and seems to love scoring against Arsenal. :p

The thing about this though, is that we haven't got very long to judge the accuracy of it. All depends on if Bentley is in the squad. But then again, when was the last time he was? :p

You've not watched much of downing then mate. Like most people who have seen him play for england usually with cole behind they have the judgement that he is rubbish. With the right left back behind him he will do a good job for villa. The problems come when he plays with a leftback like cole who likes to go forward. As cole likes to get infront of the winger and defending is not a strong point in downings game.

If he can get back to the form he showed when he first came into the boro side then villa will have a bargin.

Left winger with Cole behind you is the easiest job in the world. You don't have to defend unless he's 2 on 1, and he's constantly running defenders away on overlap.

If you can't play left wing with Cole you can't play left wing.

I must admit Downing is better for Boro than for England, but then, he was an average sized fish in a tiny pond, which obviously doesn't transfer to England.
