Xbox - in game adverts have appeared

I think its great to have adverts in on the condition that their placements are logical.

I remember seeing adverts for Obama and some film (can't remember which) in GTA4 (sure it was GTA4 - might have been Saints Row2) on the billboards. Didn't mind that. Full in adverts in loading screens however, I do object to.

You'll find that's prob Saints Row mate. Well on fight night round 4 I had a bronson advertisement in the middle of the ring I wouldn't mind if the film was actually good.

Jeez guys.

So are those of you objecting to this REALLY saying the following:

That before the adverts, you just LOVED looking at the "Loading...." screen, admire the 1080HD, AAA quality content. The company logo that just 'shimmered' in the corner of the screen, brought a sense of tingly sensation in the trouser department that you were about to embark on a journey of the utmost total and incredible collaboration between developers, artists and musicians, and within those mere seconds, your life, that life that you cherish so much, your life was complete and karma was restored before you clicked the "A" button.

And it's now ruined 'cos someone's added a Pearl and Dean advert on it.

Get a bloody grip.

Congrats on completely missing the point of the argument.

Which is what, entertain me.

Are you telling me you have no problem with advertisements being constantly shoved down your throat?

In game ads haven't got to stage where they interfere with the enjoyment of the game, yet. Thats not to say it will always stay like this. They are slowly trying to get us to accept ads in games. I think most people have.

Once everyone accepts ads as being a normal part of a game, then they will come up with new ways to sell something. Random pauses in games for an ad break? No thanks.

Yep, I'm saying EXACTLY that.

Try and put what your saying into a step by step plan:

You turn on console
You grip controller with anticipation
You load game
You look at an advert
[wait, what, 10 seconds max]
You start game

I can pretty much guarantee however that what actually happens for the majority of people is:

They turn on console
They grip controller with anticipation
They load game
They look at an advert
[start 10 seconds....
sip their drink, adjust position, get comfy, check the time, quick look around
10 seconds end]
They start game.

Adverts are part of our every day lives and for the most they go unnoticed. The Metro paper on the train/bus is packed with them, but has other articles to keep you occupied. The adverts on the TV during Trumpton, do the majority of people actually intentionally watch these? Or is their time perhaps spent with a quick pee-break, talk to family, make a cuppa, grab a can, etc, etc.

No matter what way you look at it, it's either a black screen with the words "Loading...", "Stand by...", "Get ready...", "Ooooo nearly done" etc, or some background that you've seen countless times and thought "Jeez, I'm bored with that now" or an advert.

And maybe, just maybe, there's an advert for something that MAY be of interest to you.

Then people would start complaining of invasion of privacy because they know what you want.

no, not really, go to a site like penny arcade, they dont just let anyone advertise there, they pick stuff that they'd wanna buy, and that's gonna be interesting to the audience of the site.

if i were playing, say street fighter, i would no object to a new capcom game being advertised in the load screens (Bad example as the screens are short but same concept)

halo 3 could have halo wars/ODST/ Reach in its increidbly long loads it has etc.

if im playing prototype and on a load screen i had lurpack butter or whatever, yea that'd be annoying but focused advertisments are fine.

the conspiracy theorists are just that, they arent gonna stop the game to squeeze in ad breaks every 15 mins, same way dvds havent, but they still show them at the start.

its essentially there to make up for the many millions lost due to piracy

Whilst you may just get used to them I for one object to having them unless the price is less. If you bought a cd and it had a track with an advert on it you'd be pretty upset. Same goes fora page in a book or the middle of a dvd. It's just because games are seen as a lesser art they think they can generate some extra money at our expense without passing on the savings.

Ads work. People buy things from looking at ads. I don't want ads in something I consider an "escape" from the outside world.

I know ads are everywhere, I know they aren't going anywhere and I know they will only get worse. I just hate ads.

:p im not fussed as they arent intrusive but surely when you have forked out for something it should be ad free.
Why? You pay for Sky tv, newspapers, magazines etc, they still have ads. Where did this notion that advertisements are present to subsidize the consumer come from?

I'm sure games are escape for a lot of people, but many games also try to accurately portray a real world setting. If I'm playing a football game for example, I want it to be as close as possible to what I'd see watching footie on tv, so that includes the banners on the side of the pitch. Same with attempting to portray a real life city, I expect to see billboards just as I do in real life. Personally, ads have no influence on me at all, other than helping to recreate a real world setting.

Obviously it's as silly to say ads are completely fine as it is to just dismiss them outright. If ads weren't in-game (menu's, loading screens etc) then I don't even begin to have an issue as long as the function isn't comprimised. It's when inappropriate ads intrude on the game world that it could become a real problem. I'm yet to see anything on this level that actually bothered me, but an example I can recall is the Burger King ads all throughout Fight Night 3. They never actually bothered me, but they were always noticably out of place and I can see why ads used in this manner may annoy people.

As it stands today, ads are an extra source of income for publishers/devs that enable them to 1. Make a profit (That's the bit you don't really need to care about) 2. Make quality games for the consumer to the best of their ability (That's the bit you should care about). If/when the time comes that we see ads plastered throughout Uncharted 2, Gears 3, God of War 3 or any other completely unsuitable non real world setting, then I think there would be justification in suggesting the ads are becoming intrusive to the point of harming the experience. Until we reach that point, I don't see any reason to dismiss ads out of principle.

Now I say all that, but I also know that no amount of discussion will stop the bitching from 'hardcore' gamers. The sense of entitlement that seems to have crept in over the last few years is quite honestly astounding, and it really is any little thing they will complain about. I guess DLC and ads are just the new thing for the hard done by gamer to feel aggrieved by.

Ultimately this will be decided by gamers. Look how well DRM faired once the consumer had spoken with their wallets!

Like I said before though I'm in favour if the ads arn't intrusive. In real life you walk anywhere and you see ads, why not in games which are based in our reality?
