Why do people bother "working out"?

So you dont enjoy it? Does that not make you incredibly vein to do something that you dont enjoy purely to improve your body which probably doesnt need improving?

If people enjoy it cool, thats the same as anything. But your scenario makes me chuckle.

Is it also incredibly vain to improve your mind? Ill bet you dont think so.

I didn't mean that the abs were the cause of the triangle shape, I meant that they only look silly when the body starts to get into that shape. When the shoulders get too wide, the chest looks distorted and no longer just healthy.

hmm, thats bizare, allot of guys try and like to have that shape. Maybe NOT massive though. I have broad shoulders and my body sloaps downwards.

ladies seem to like it! :D

I try to do my best for the following reasons -
- Down from 16 stone to 14 stone 6 has led to an increase in fitness and confidence, my clothes fit better, ive had to get new tshirts and everything
- I enjoy the feeling after a workout
- It improves performance on the football field

Realistically i want to drop down to about 75 - 80 KG but im gonna do that longish term, and aim to start seriously (diet and all) in september with a view to being in good shape (showing abs with strong legs and chest/arms) by july next year, in time to hit the beach :)

What do you make of visible abs? Showy, only for posers? Intimidating? Would you rather just see a flat stomach that is undefined?

Same here. Ive also dropped from about 16.5 stone at the end of 2007 down to about 14.25 stone now. As a result, a lot of my shirts now hang off me, and my jeans are baggier. In fact, I bought myself a new pair of trousers the other day, and was smiling as I managed to fit into a pair of 36" regulars. It's a bit annoying having to buy some new clothes, but it's far outweighed by the good feeling of being able to fit into smaller clothes and look better in them.

Now, i am not talking about people who need to lose weight due to health issues, and proper issues such as this.

I am talking about people who actually go to the gym to "tone up" and "body build", before going they were normal people, perfectly healthy (to an extent which meant that they were able to live their life without hindrance etc).

I don't get it. I have a beer belly, and am now on the higher end of BMI "normal/healthy" range, and i don't care one little bit. Neither do my friends, neither do women, so who actually does? I eat whatever i want when i want, i don't bother with the gym (almost see it as working without pay tbh), i don't bother exercising beyond a normal "active" lifestyle and although not toned i am a normal regular looking "bloke".

I see so many people obsessed with the gym and stuff

:/

same way you care about something else, others care about health, who cares.

As for women not caring, some do, some don't. For me, a woman who cares that i'm healthy, is a woman who probably cares she's healthy, and will probably be more careful, not let herself go and teach her kids(and potentially my kids) to be healthier aswell which are all things I want. So I go for fit and healthy women and would hope being fit and healthy are a high priority for her also.

I personally don't get the "I want to be as big as possible" mentality, the guys that hit the gym, get massive, for no reason. I understand someone who competes in strongmen competitions(for a living) doing it. I understand a footballer staying in very good shape, I understand boxers staying the appropriate weight to maintain their effectiveness, I just can't understand this be as big as possible for the sake of it thing.

You see huge guys down the gym who can barely move, have no flexibility, can't run fast and can't really do much other than lift.

If/when the next big war comes around, i'd prefer to be drafted to a unit of healthy strong people than a bunch of pot bellied idiots who think being healthy is pointless.

Same way when I'm 40-50 I want to be thin enough to run around with my kids playing football without running out of breath, having a heart attack or generally embarassing my kids.

i don't go to the gym, but i find doing a few miles on the push bike makes me feel good (serotonin), and also makes my sleep pattern less insomniac like... If I go a day or two with no or little exercise, I find it hard to get to sleep...

I'm lucky in the fact I can eat what I want and always look skinny, I guess if I wanted to get some muscle I could but it all seems like too much effort (weights/suppliments/etc.)!

Deffo mate, i had a pair of 80 quid diesel jeans that fitted well just after i lost a big chunck of that weight, now they hang off me as my body fat has reduced!
Can't wait till i settle on a jean size, hopefully 32inch soonish!

When it comes down to it, most guys do it for the ladies and in the mean time manage to get full of themselves and more vain than the women they're supposed to be impressing.

Now thats a little harsh. Granted I have received compliments from women (and men) but I wouldn't say it makes me feel better then the woman.

Remember, muscle doesn't make up for personality.

lol no..

the guys who go to the gym to beef up a little may do it for the ladies..but the real huge dudes, they do it for themselves and to impress other dudes.

Most guys? are you sure? I only know one person who got a bit full of themselves, most people I know who like to workout are pretty down to earth and do it primarily for their own benefit, looking good for the ladies is an added bonus

After reading the thread many people from SA have covered what I was going to say. It's like anything in life you want a reward. For me there is nothing better than getting in the gym and training hard. Every day getting stronger and bigger there is literally nothing like it to compare to. However it's not for everyone, although most lads have a stint of going to the gym and messing about with a few weights very few can stick at it for long or build anything worthwhile. You are not bothered about your appearance or physical strength and are happy with a beer belly etc, that's fine I can understand why, so surely you can do the same?
