Why do people bother "working out"?

Pff i know you need both for a lot of sports, and i train for both, and what FF said is true the majority of well built people are fitter than random people on the street. But if you had to do only one exclusively it would be possible to be fit just doing running/ cycling,

i don't think it would be possible just weight lifting and wheeling on a wheel chair all day at 1mph or sat on a chair.

says on wiki since we seem to use this as a source; Physical fitness is an attribute required for service in virtually all military forces.

whats the majority of fitness in military...running, and running with weight very little "heavy" exersises involved as they aren't directly related to "essential" fitness.

You can use any source you want mate..Physically fitness is more than just running....and any source will agree with that :o

Check the physical tests for the US or UK military..I guarantee there is more than just running in them ;)
 
I do it because I want my body to be strong & healthy and I want it to stay that way for the next 50 odd years. I only really started 'working out' recently to shed a bit of spare padding and make my body stronger.

What I mean by stronger is not your Arnie power-lifting tearing up phone books, but being able to withstand the stresses, strains and knocks of everyday life. My job isn't phsically demanding so I have the capacity to just sit on my arse, get fat and develop muscular-skeletal problems from poor posture & ergonomics. Exercise means that I compensate for an inactive work life and protects me from injuring myself when I am lifting, shifting, digging, etc.

By putting in the effort now and working to maintain a standard I hopefuly won't have to work as hard as I move into later life and I can carry that strength and health into later life. I'd rather be a stronger, fitter , healthier old man than a weak & frail one.
 
I think that looking at fitness in terms of strength and cardio is far too surgical for what the word is generally used to imply.

That is, someone who is fit is someone that is atheletically able and healthy.
 
Loving the randomness of some of the comments here.... I think i go these days just for a stress relief especially after been at university all day for example, plus the buzz from it is quite nice, as is going for a swim.

When I first started going I just got fed up of having no energy, been 21 unfit and starting to put on weight did not seem right at all.

I do a lot of weights and a lot of cardio in equal amounts really, but my diet is nowhere near good enough in reality to see maximum gains from it so that I think says something about why I go, it certainly isn’t to put on loads of weight.
 
I don't go to the gym but I do exercise and bodybuild at home. I do it for the rush that it gives and the benefits in health (you do notice them after a while).
I only started recently and at first it was a chore but now I actually really enjoy it and look forward to it.
 
What makes me laugh, especially on these forums, is the 'bodybuilders' who, when put to the test couldn't run after wheelchair bound cripple whose wheels had fallen off, yet they think they are somehow 'fit'.

Not many 'bodybuilders' would claim to be fit; most are well aware of their physical limitations.

Also, who would have thought that a cyclist has a higher aerobic fitness level than a bodybuilder? :eek:
 
I think too much muscle is a bit ugly tbh, but i'm pretty sure some people think skinny cardigan wearers with zero muscle are ugly so meh:p

I like playing football, or cricket, generally keeping fit - but i have no interest in "pumping iron".
 
Because pumping iron gives you self respect?
I have no problem with people doing this, i do a little myself just to keep myself abit more active.

I believe from the problem here is a lack of self esteem.

Quite a narrow view you got there imo.. i go the gym and i really enjoy it.. i can unwind after a day at work, clear my head, and get healthier at the same time.. whats not good about that?

Totally agree with this. I joined the gym last week and have been going 3 times a week, already I feel great and am getting much fitter. I was not particularly overweight (about 1 stone) but I do not want health problems later on in life. It's such a good way to destress and also I have been sleeping much better too.
 
For myself it's both a hobby and vanity. I feel I get a lot more attention than when I was smaller. Walking around with a tshirt on for example, I generally just feel better. I've never had a beer belly and I'd never want one.
 
Someone who can't run 3 miles (at a reasonable pace for their age) can't call themselves fit ever imo.

I would find it very difficult to run 3 miles, but I consider myself fit. Running just isn't my strongest form of exercise, like swimming isn't. But give me a bike, or ask me to walk and I can go on for hours and hours. Running isn't the be all and end all of fitness...

Quite a good indicator of your cardio capacity though - running is harder than cycling or walking, your heart and lungs have to work a lot faster.

Maybe you aren't as fit as you think?

Cycling is a doddle unless it's uphill, and most people can walk for hours.
