Xbox - in game adverts have appeared

I actually think they could add to the atmosphere of the game, if they fit in to the time period and logics of the game.

I.e, I wouldn't want to see current adverts for "The News of the World" in Fallout 3!

Even if they did go over the top then who would buy it? Its the same reason we don't have feature films in the theme of an infomercial lol.

My original point stands.

Adverts are Not as good as No adverts.

Whether developers get cash or not.

What sort of loading screens do I want? Immersive ones, Fallout 3 loading screens that give you gaming tips, Not fallout 3 loading screens that sell you Chocolate Bars

Mass Effect, I want to see the Ship with a Spinning Mass Effect Drive, Not Adverts for the Best a man can Get

I think people need to differentiate between product placement in games, and advertising in games, because they're two different things with potentially very different effects. Product placement, when done sensibly and appropriately, is fine and can even help the immersion factor in some cases, such as in football or racing games. I don't think anyone's arguing against that, it's blatant in-your-face advertising or over-exaggerated product placement that's the problem.

Your point works for the two examples used, but it doesn't work as a blanket statement (Although perhaps a real example would have worked even better than a strawman :p).

The given scenario of a real world setting still applies, ads can and generally do help give realism. That's probably the most obvious example of a type of game being improved in some way due to ads (even if in game their main pruprose is still to advertise and adding realism is just a fortunate by-product).

As far as I can tell from the severely limited attention I've paid to this thread, people seem to agree that there's not much bother with the ads, as long as they don't disrupt the game. Billboards in the background, no problem. 30-sec loading screens, something's gone wrong. Is everyone happy? Relative term.

No adverts = Fine

Adverts = Less than fine

there's no other way to look at it, and you're kidding yourself if you think there is

what a croc.....
walking/driving around sandbox worlds i could only imagine adverts (billboards/shops/newspaper stands/buses etc) adding to the game.

adverts = totaly fine as long as they don't hinder game play.

Jeez guys.

So are those of you objecting to this REALLY saying the following:

<snip>

And it's now ruined 'cos someone's added a Pearl and Dean advert on it.

Get a bloody grip.

well said..

so when the new F1 game comes out, you'd prefer it with no adverts?
in fact there are many games that would not work as well without the adverts.

as for loading screens, i'd care less whether it was Mass Effects drive or a screen full of skittles, as i'm usually looking in other directions during that part of a games process.

if the game took a minute to load and they decided to replace some of the various manufacture placements with say a skittles advert then whats the problem? i dont sit starring at the screen while a game is loading so i can't see it ever being a problem, apparently some do though.

Because it sets a precedent. I don't pay £30 for a game to then have unskippable ads pushed down my throat. It also means that developers/publishers are going to be less inclined to make load times as short as possible.

I'm actually stunned that some people here are pro-adverts.

I'm not talking about ingame. What you are referring to is product placement, Something that has been around for AGES.

ADVERTS ON LOADING SCREENS, Are a move in the wrong direction

Edited cos I sounded like a grumpy grinchy ****** :D

Good job on totally missing the point, If you read my thread as a whole its BLATANTLY obvious I'm not talking about ingame. What you are referring to is product placement, Something that has been around for AGES.

While I think I would tend to lean towards agreeing with you on loading screen ads, I wouldn't say it's blatantly obvious at all that your original post is referring specifically to such ads, came accross more as a blanket statement. Even your following post seemed like you were using a (not factually accurate afaik) example to back up your point, as opposed to referring entirely to loading screen ads.

Just noticed your edit, I would requote but my entire point is based on the part you deleted. :p

Product placement is advertising btw.

:D Yeah my original post was an Uber Blanket I agree, Wasnt meant as such though, product placement and the like, With buses, billboards and newspapers is something thats been around for a while. My point and the blanket in question was more aimed at hijacking my lovely blank loading screens :(
