My new pen

People still use pens as a legitimate daily work tool (ignoring artists)?

I occasionally scribble down the odd doodle of breasts and penises alongside quick scruffy notes if I rarely need to work things out but I'm struggling to find why someone would need a decent pen these days that would get used for most of the day.
I can appreciate the over engineered pen stuff (much like watches etc) but even if I wasn't a scrubber I'd probably never buy them.

Nice pen there mate :) I don't suffer from the left handed disease and can use fountain pens. I can feel the difference between the £10 Parker, £40 Watermans and £150 Mont Blanc: the ink flows smoother, the nib is less scratchy and the pen feels nicer to use in general, so I can understand why you would get a nicer pen. Looks great.

The difference in pens is much more noticable with a fountain pen I've found in my limited experience. The quality of the materials and craftsmanship extends to the nib which is of course what you feel making contact with the paper. Not so with a rollerball/ballpoint, where the refills are much of a muchness.

Well if you ever have the need to attend meetings for work, how do you make notes? Do you not want a record of the pertinent points for you, know what actions you took away or ever need to consult your own personal record of what was discussed at a later date?

I see more and more in the office people getting laptops out to take notes, but it gets ridiculous when there's ten of you sat round a table and you can't see anyone because they're ducked down behind the screen typing. There's still a role to play for good old pen and paper IMO.

Yeah, my bad. Forgot about them, but most of my meetings I either doodle, or just write down a couple of words for things that need doing. Actual useful writing is stored on the wiki, but I work as a software engineer rather then a manager or something and use... I collection of random free pens I come across, seeing as I can't doodle to save my life!

My meetings are dull, and I generally only wake up when someone mentions something that needs doing :p

I have a Lamy pen that's worth about £250 given to me by my father. People have them for the same reasons as they do expensive watches I guess.

I never use and and don't even have it on display on my desk. I'm not into that transparent display of wealth rubbish.

£125, which is about half the retail cost. I think it is an outgoing model so it was being sold off at discount. Seems like a lot, but considering how well made it is, and will last a lifetime, I'm happy.

HAHAHAAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Most executives and many middle managers spend their entire days in meetings, where the pen is an invaluable tool for most of the time. :)

I lose my pens almost instantly so that would not be a wise purchase for me. Any money it ends up in someone elses pocket by mistake.

If you can find one, get one of HP's pens that their marketing people are currently giving away. Nice weight and finish to it and better than most biros the IT firms give away.

But a ball point is fail, if he got a fountain pen then people would be more understanding.

At least the case it came in, is nice.

Reckon a trip to my old uni on a job fair day will solve that:

J. Random - "Are you looking for a job?"
Me - "Why... yes... Yes I am, hey can I get a pen?"
J. R. - "Sure there you go"
Me - "Yoink!"
Disappears into the sunset!

I am sorry but... its a pen...

I can't compare it to a watch, expensive shoes, a car, a new TV or anything else...

I have a pen that someone got me from a trip in florida, which is the same kind that astronaughts use, and can write in space, upside down, blah blah blah, made of metal, has a case, and probably cost a heck of a lot less. End of the day, its a pen...

Fair enough though if you want to pay for it...

Interchangable with ballpoint refills. I'm left handed and my cack-handed writing style makes fountain pens a no go area.

tell me about it I'm right handed but my style of writing means using a fountain pen is impossible :(

The OP basically revealed his motives in the first line of his post, i.e. "watch afficiandos might apreciate this"

Basically, I have the cash to buy something which although in reality is simply a functional device, I can gain myself recognition amongst like minded individuals who like to overtly display their capacity to acquire items of value, and/or like to go on and on about how excessively well built said item is, but in this case I can't quite afford one of them watches so I'll go for a pen instead.
