After getting my new TV I think I need to sort the sound out.

It's not as good as our old CRT, pretty obvious really due to how thin it is and the size of the speakers, but just feels a bit weak.

Annoyingly I've got a stereo in the living room but there's no way of positioning the speakers so they are either side of the TV, and having all the sound come out, albeit in stereo, to one side of the TV is just too weird.

So I'm looking at decent 2.1 systems, don't want 5.1 and don't think I really need a center channel either, just want a bit more meat to things.

I've seen the ONKYO HTX-22HD which looks brilliant, anyone here got one or had any experiences with them?

Also the place I'm looking at buying from for an extra £30 will do a 5 year warranty, is it worth it on these kind of things or just another con?

Also is there anything else in this price range or cheaper (this is my upper limit) that can offer similar functionality? Don't really have room for an external amp so somethign with a built in sub/amp would be nice.

My dad bought this system as he didnt want 5.1.

The nice thing about the onkyo is that it supports the new HD audio formats (well some at least, not sure its an exhaustive list) and has a couple of HDMI inputs. You can also upgrade it later with the SKS-11 package to give you full 5.1 if you want.

It should be worth noting that there is a reported issue about buzzing with this set, but if yours does buzz then you can have it repaired free of charge.

There is a big thread about these on AVforums.

edit: as for sound quality... you get what you pay for. It sounded good enough but the subwoofer is not very large and you could tell it was struggling during some loud scenes. You would obviously get a better sound out of a separates system but I think it is better than a lot of 'one box solutions' as it allows for upgrading etc

Only a smallish room and tbh I'm not getting it for blow my socks off loud, just something a little better than the TV :)

Been reading all about the buzzing thing earlier, not too worried if it gets fixed for free :)

My only other question is can you lay the small speakers on their side, I need something that'll lie 'landscape' rather than upright so it fits under the TV nicely.

Might have to persuade the wife we need one...

answered my own question, You cnt have HD audio via 2.1 its got to be be 5.1 system. Shame as i was going to get this to link up with the ps3.

I have one of these mate and believe me, for the money I paid its the best purchase I've made in a long, long time.

I have the 5.1 speakers at present, but even if you use 2.1 or 3.1 (Get yourself a nice centre) the unit sounds great. Blue-Ray from the PS3 is brilliant. You won't get True-HD audio from any system unless you go 5.1/7.1.

If you can find one of these I'd say go for it if the price is right ;)

I have this package, it is excellent for the money. It was available for a while at £180,super purchase.

so because it dosent cost a grand it wont be any good:rolleyes:,it is getting some great feedback from the lads at av-forums

HD audio is another tech marketed to destruction as being a 'MUST HAVE', just like 1080p.

By using an older (arcam, lexicon, meridian) DD/DTS av receiver or proc+power amp compared to a fancy onkyo £500 HD audio receiver, the older high end equipment will sound superior to an all in one HD receiver like an onkyo for example.

Best to focus on a speakers/sub that sound great and are setup well with a well paired amp, than worry about badges and HD audio codecs ;)

Missed out on a stupid bargain over at avforums today. An arcam AV9 processor and P7 7 channel amp for just over £1k. That stuff cost well over £5 when it came out a few years ago, and is a better buy than some fancy new age av receiver.

£5.50? Sorry, had to :(.

Are there many systems similar to this setup?

I don't want a 5.1 system as I rent so would have a problem with the wiring etc. I also don't need a dvd player as I'll be using my PS3. This system seems perfect but a bit more than I was going to pay really.

(Sorry for the mini hi-jack :o you seem to be looking for the same thing as me :))

Thanks

exactly the sae requirements, although susbstitute rent for wife as the reason and you're sorted :p

Let me know how they go, the Onkyo seems good as it has all the latest connection etc, however with it just being a 2 speaker system is there any point if I'm not going to get the extra speakers that you can buy to make it a 5.1?

But then the flexibility is there if I want to in future, argh.

It's an old system with just a 3.5mm connection but with it plugged into the headphone jack it's a marked improvement over the TV's speakers. Much fuller sound and some decent bass now!
