Windows 7 hits RC stage Build 7100

I have Win7 pre-ordered, is there any chance I'll be able to use the key I'll get in October with my current install? It was such a pain in the arse to bend win7 to my will, I'd rather not have to go through it again if possible. What I have now is perfect.

Nate

Why on earth would you choose to use the Release Candidate over the final build?

Short answer is no, though. It's a pain yes, but it's pre-release software so you can't really complain.

Due to my Xp install finally giving up the ghost (thanks ATI) I have moved over to win7 7229. I have, after many days of tweaking and cajoling, I have gotten it to act and feel the way I want it, as well as managing to get all of my peripherals working (Logitech were late to the game, but came through in the end).

No a clean install is the only way to go in the EU as Ms are not allowed to bundle the Browser. I have found W7 to be the easiest OS ever to install in my case with absolutely no drivers to be found by myself. You are on 7229 the latest build is 7600 -713 which is probably the RTM but of course only 30 days evaluation

Yeah I know you're right, I kinda knew when tweaking that I'd probably have to do it all again, I just wanted to be sure I had no options. I might try a repair install when i get the final build, worth a try before the RC install is nuked.

As for my willingness to use the RC over the Final Build... It works perfectly for me now, and I don't need to change it (yet). Then again, I'd still be on XP if going from Nvidia to ATI hadn't fubared my XP install.

awesome

Of course, today’s release is also the result of the amazing amount of feedback we received from the millions of people who tested Windows 7 – from Beta to RC. We actually had over 10 million people opt-in to the Customer Experience Improvement Program (CEIP). That’s a lot of people opting in to help us make Windows 7 a solid release. Through CEIP, our engineers were guided by customer feedback all the way to RTM. We also have had a great group of beta testers who have dedicated a great deal of their time to testing Windows 7 too. A special thank you goes out to all the people who helped test Windows 7.

That's pretty awesome as well. 10 million beta users eek

Using the 64bit version with 4GB or memory installed, why does this say only 3GB available ?

So, just installed the 'RTM' for giggles.

First off, before I mess about how do I sort the fonts! ClearType seems to be forced on, even when I turn it off in display properties the bookmarks/toolbars etc. are all fuzzy but the text is nice and crisp. Turn ClearType ON and the bookmarks/toolbars etc. are nice and crisp and the text is nasty and blurry!

ClearType is the enemy.

Oh another thing. Yeah great the taskbar finally has some transparency, but if you've got anything open like I don't know, a web browser on a white page (google) OR any program with a bottom status bar type thing (pretty much everything) you can't see whats on the chuffing taskbar because its just white! Didn't really think that through did they.

EDIT: Heres what I mean.

ClearType OFF, yay nice pixel perfect fontage, but the bookmarks toolbar on FF is all blurry.

ClearType ON, EURGH sick, everythings blurry and horrible, except the blasted bookmarks toolbar on FF looks like cleartype is off!?

Brilliant Nate that fixed it! What a PITA to change such a simple thing though.

Next up, why can't I sort in anything but Details view anymore? Having all my pictures in Large Icon thumbnail and also sorted by Date Modified in Vista was fantastic, wheres it gone!?

Next up!

How can I edit the Navigation Pane more? I don't want the libraries/homegroup there, but see no way to remove them?

MSN Messenger really doesn't enjoy this new taskbar style also!

EDIT: More problems/questions.

How can I get the vista style gradient sidebar back? It seems a bit stupid to get rid of it entirely? I can have the gadgets floating anywhere on the desktop (Just like Vista) OR have them snap to the edges, but without a nice surround like in vista.

Oh and LOL at the time remaining calculation being even worse than Vista. I've been copying 270gb of backup, and its been on "About 1 hour" for just over 2 hours now. Nice one.

All this effort making Libraries work and I can't even display it in the start menu? Displaying my TV and Film collections as links would be perfect.

I have a little problem with 7100.

When I load COD4, select a sever it loads in a couple of seconds, sometimes I get a flash of the screen then the screen goes blank & black, I can hear the ambient noise from the game, usually it stays like this for 10-15 seconds before I get the screen back in game. It actually freezes during this time, my ping goes to 999. If I have Vent running this works fine so it isn't a full system hang.

Any idea what could cause this? Most of my spec is in my sig, running all the latest drivers as far as I know.

At the moment the only copies of RTM version are pirated. Legal versions will be on MSDN/Technet on the 6th August and in the shops on October 22nd.

I prefer the term leaked better as that's what it is. There is no working activation key so you can only re-arm it 3 times.

I also wouldn't trust any patch. I'm sure trying to activate a build that isn't being sold yet will surely get noticed.
