New Car (sorry it's a BMW)

£2k and the rest i would bet, just had a look for auto diesel sports and they are a fair bit more than what you paid :p

good work on having the new box in it, how many miles has it done?

It's a petrol though, and not a 330i. ;)

It's done 139k miles, the 'new' box has done about 65k.

wow, any info on why the box gave up so early in its life?

i know i know, its a petrol :p
i wasnt only looking at 330d sports, was any diesel :p

The e46 autoboxes are a bit of a weak link from what I've read over the years, I had an auto 325ci until a couple of years ago and it was always my worry that the box was on the way out. There are loads of people on e46fanatics.com who lose reverse so I'm guessing the same thing happened to this one.

Great buy!

Steptronic 'box? - I was always worried about the same box in my old e38, it started to not change up into 5th unless I provoked it manually which pretty much made me get shot.

That said, my Dads e39 528i has the same 'box and is knocking on the door of 260k miles without issue, it changes smoother than my previous e38 and my current e36!

I especially like the seats. :)

Very nice find indeed, it's a handsome car :) ...practical, fun, good looking and very well priced all at once, what more could you ask for.

Funny you should mention autobox problems, the autobox on my E46, in the last few months I had the car started to randomly hold onto gears for much longer than it should and wouldn't change up until I took my foot completely off the throttle and then just tapped it again. It wasn't consistent though, it could go a week without doing it once.

The thing is, the first 2 years I had it, it never did anything like that at all, just the last 4 months or so. A few times it also gave me a bit of a shunt when going into reverse too. I wasn't happy about it anyway, and is the main reason I got shot of the car when I did, there were other reasons, I was looking for another one anyway, but due to odd behaviour from the autobox I thought I better speed things up. I still liked that car a lot though, it was a better car than the ST220 for sure.

Great car, great price, confused why you bought it as not 2 months ago you were saying how daft it is people replace cars simply because they have a baby on the way, you even explained how practical your 328 was ;)

No ISOFix in the 328. :( ;)

Thanks for all the nice comments everyone.

Edd, the autoboxes aren't bad - ideal for around here (near J7 of the M4) where traffic is normally stop/start. You have a 'manual' mode on the box and you can also fit a paddleshift wheel to the car which I did to my old 325ci although I found I never really used that at all. I specifically wanted an auto in this case as the missus prefers it by miles and she will be driving this car more than me.

I knew that was your plan.;)

Do the auto boxes have service interval where the oil and filter are changed on them? Or are they sealed for life like the new auto boxes. If its the latter might well be worth giving them an oil change at reasonable mileage.

They are sealed for life, but I've actually read a few horror stories on e46fanatics where people have changed the oil and then the box has gone not long afterwards. It's probably a coincidence but there are quite a few.

She loves the car, and her reasoning for it is the number plate as it is ZPE so she has now named the car Zippy. She admitted she would have hated it had the plate been CNT or something. Women.

I would guess thats because the first time a lot of people think of changing the oil is when the gearbox isnt working as it should anyway. On the E60s people seem to change the oil at around 70-80k and disregard the sealed for life recommendation.

As I said, looks very nice :D

Are you going to put your private plate on the Z4?

Not sure what to do about the plate to be honest, how long does it all take to sort out? Obviously I can't ruin 'zippy' with it.

Dandle yeah I guess people also change the oil at high mileage which will mean the box is closer to failure as well.

If you still own both cars you can do a transfer, costs £90 I think and only takes a week or two.
