MP's want £25 a day for food?

You cant give them a £200,000 a year job can you. I mean think about it. These are the people that knew that when they were doing was wrong and yet they still did it and tried to justify it with "we were allowed".

Well that is a surprise, you made the rules on allowances and you were allowed to commit what was essentially fraud, but within the law.

If you gave them £200,000 to cover everything I bet they would suddenly have half the expenses they used to.

i'd rather it was a flat rate salary tied to a the average of directors salaries across ftse 100 companies or something than have all this fuss about allowances. How much time has this wasted over the last few months when MPs could have been doing much more productive things such as focussing on the future of the economy rather than arguing over a few millions here and there. Yes, you will argue 'they were on the take, how can they run the country with such morals' but i genuinely believe that such a system will always encourage people to take advantage of it, you just have to look at any corporate expenses system and all kinds of things 'go on expenses'. Is it morally questionable? certainly, has it been blown out of all proportion, in my opinion absolutely.

What?

What the hell did they base this on? what on earth would justify over paid, people to get an extra 25 quid for food which nobody else gets.

So retarded. They get an extra 5 hours of the average persons wage for sod all.

Two lol's:

lol @ the amount of restrictions on people and businesses to ensure minimal tax avoidance benefits occur for the better of this country

and

lol @ them not following their own rules and how even after abusing public money for years they continue with new schemes to scam the people

Oh the ironing!! ^_^

As if they do not earn enough to feed themselves

A fair few years ago, they reduced Mp's wages, they earn similar to a good teachers wage, 40k +

They should, no sorry, they need to scrap this "expenses" idea, and just pay the MP's more. That way, they can concentrate on having one job (many have more then one to help finance themselves), which in turn will make their job more productive.

Ever been to london on business, you do know how much it costs to eat away from mummy and daddy yea?

er you do realise it isnt for restaraunts etc? they are living in a house that they own they can simply nip to a supermarket and easily buy a days worth of food for half of 25quid.
your telling my a single person needs £125 - £175 worth of shopping for a week? atheletes probably dont need much more than that.

is it beyond there realm to nip to sainsburys , asda , tesco , iceland , morrisons or even marks and spencers?

plenty of people get £25 when working away for food allowence. Several of us have already said we get this.
you dont have a second home , fully furnished and paid for from your company that your staying in though? so when working away your food expenses are a lot more than someone who just needs to put a few bits and bobs in the fridge

Who says its not and can't be used for a restaurant in the evenings etc???

They may have late meetings and the best way to get food is either a take out or to nip out and continue office meetings with a meal.

It also depends how you want to eat at home, i can't stand cheap naff food, whilst i wouldn't spend £25 a day at home i have 0 issue spending close to this on high quality, good for you and tasty food.

cant imagine many mps have late night meetings, if you want to eat good quality good then good for your but food expenses should cover the minimum , if you want to top it up with your own money then very good.

why should mps eat like kings when our soldiers are expected to eat crap?

I should imagine the scenario you are describing — in which an MP is able to stay in a second home owned by themselves, either in London or in their constituency, when away from their main home on parliamentary business and an overnight stay is reasonably necessary — would be the exception rather than the norm. MPs who have second homes such that they could qualify for this allowance would no doubt come under some significant scrutiny if they appear to be abusing it.

I believe the more common scenario this subsistence allowance would be applicable to is MPs staying overnight in hotels, in which case it most probably is "beyond there [sic] realm" to venture to a local supermarket to purchase ingredients and prepare a meal for themselves (this would be impossible in most cases, impractical at best), and in which case this is for restaurants, convenience food, etc. In this scenario £25 a day (most probably spread across at least two meals) is perfectly reasonable.
