Reasons why W7 is not 'Vista with SP3'?

Just reinstalling all my apps and stuff at the mo and I can tell big apps are loading quite a bit quicker than Vista64 did when I installed that and got back up to speed.

Photoshop CS4 64bit for example from cold boot loads up in the same time it used to in Vista64 without a cold boot!

Firefox cold start also is virtually immediate.

Nice!

It's all very well having all these new features but what use are they if games and software cant take advantage.
All we are paying for really until we see real world benefit is a new vista skin and theme.I mean we are just barely starting to see one or two games making use of quad core technology let alone 4 gigs + of ram.

Usability? I've been using 7 about two hours and I already feel like I can get things done quicker than on Vista. The new taskbar is great, jump lists are great, the new Aero features are great. Those things help you whatever software you use. It's not all about games.

I've been using Windows 7 for many months. Whiles its nicer looking I'm struggling to see any productivity improvements in the GUI myself. Perhaps it suits some more than others. Alt task vs Jump lists? Either works fine for me. using shortcut keys is generally faster than a mouse for many things. Aero features are pretty but which make you more productive?

W7 runs much better on older hardware than Vista. Also you couldnt happily run Vista on a netbook like you can with W7. To get that drastic an improvement in performance takes more than a service pack.

I'm playing with Win7 64-bit tonight... the taskbar animation annoyed me too, so I just turned it off. Control Panel > System > Advanced system settings > Performance > Visual effects > deselect 'animations in the taskbar and start menu' :)

I found a taskbar layout which I really like.

Previously on Vista I had a RocketDock on the right with my most-used programs. By moving the taskbar to the right I've killed two birds with one stone. It also makes it more intuitive for me and helps me get used to it because having it on the right breaks the mental link with the old-style taskbar and makes me use it more like the dock. Bonus is that I get more vertical space.

Loving the OS in general as well. Can't believe this is pre-release software... stable, streamlined and very fast. Can't remember another MS OS that was close to this good before SP1. When release day comes I'm gonna get an SSD - will make it even better.

? Is that much difference?? btw I've already pre-ordered win7 for £44.99:D so I'm not knocking it

i think the show hidden icons in the teskbar is great.

also to pin shortcuts to programs on the teskbar is good.

It is a bit different, yeah. The 7 taskbar doesn't distinguish between applications you have open and apps that you have pinned to the taskbar (apart from the highlight). So the taskbar doubles as a dock, which is really useful. Tends to encourage me to have a dozen apps running at once, which is great as long as you have the RAM for it.

Conversely, the 'show hidden icons' is driving me a bit crazy. Moving the mouse up to get to the icons just doesn't feel natural, especially with that 'customize' text always in the way.

u can drag the icons out from the 'show hidden icons' . or u can turn it off so it'll be like vista.

You could showhide inactive taskbar icons in XP
You could pin shortcuts to the taskbar in XP (Quick Launch)

Gadgets well I like the example of shutdown/restart, clock, all duplicating whats in the taskbar already. I don't use them, but I'm sure there must be some use
for them.

Just one of the many little reasons why Win7 is better than vista :p

Oh and quick peak on running app windows is another, can quickly check on torrent downloads/messages in msn etc without having to raise the minimised app or message window.

Have to say I never "eject" anything. Just yank the cord.

Which is fine for most things but not all external drives! for example we use portable lacie drives here at work and if you xfer a bunch of shizzle to them and just yank it out once done when you go to open the docs some may be corrupted but go to safely remove option then unplug it and it's perfectly fine.

Not worth the risk IMO especially for external backup disks and Win7 makes the process so much quicker if you're doing it regularly.

Windows 7 still called as "Vista R2" cos W7 using 50% of Vista core kernel as you can see Vista is NT6.0 and W7 is NT6.1 so it wee bit change but nothing else more. it just change like taskbar, aero,etc.. but I dont see any difference and I would leave it out until next Windows OS that will be new Windows 8 due by 2011/2012

So it up to you to buy and replace Vista or XP but I stay in Vista SP2 just now and save up for next one with upgrade hardwares - i wouldnae spend too much money between 2007 to 2009 that too short.

What?
As has been said already countless times, it's got way more than just a .1 build advance and aero changes.

If you didn't notice the difference over the course of 2-3 days of solid use in everything then perhaps you're not using your pc to the same level as everyone else.

Windows XP was 5.1 compared to Windows 2000 5.0, but I doubt you or many others stayed on Windows 2000 because XP was only a 'Windows 2000 service pack'

Just because they haven't made a ton of changes to the kernel doesn't mean it isn't a whole new OS.

I mainly use external drives, 2.5 externals now all encypted with TrueCrypt. I dismount the TrueCrypt. But don't eject them. Never have over many years. Maybe I've been lucky. Wonder what up with lacie drives.

This is on XP of course so it may well be the way XP handles drive hotswaps without safe-ejecting. ON my Vista (and now 7) machine(s) at home though never had a problem with either method but I like to be safe either way so on 7 have ejected all the time purely because it's 2 very short clicks instead of click expand click then click again as on xp/vista!

I mind!

Actually I don't mind :p I'm just not at my home PC atm but it is logged into MSN so excuse any delays, will RDP in for a bit!
