***The Official Nokia N97 Thread (Keep all N97 stuff in here)***

Ah that's OK then. The reason I ask is because in videos people seemed to be solely using the scroll bar and I think that would bug me.

Bear in mind that it won't be like using the scrollbar in the menus or scrolling in the browser. It's more like highlighting an icon with your finger and then when you drag your finger over an icon on the bottom row of a grid of icons, or drag below the last item on a list, scrolling will start, row by row, so it looks a bit juddery lol.

take the battery cover off to attach the stylus. If you looked in manual its called 'wrist strap'

Iv just got my n97 yesterday, i really dont know what to think of it, it seems great but its a bit of a let down.

Orange 'unlimited internet' has a 1gb fair usage policy, and they charge you if you go over? how does that work. I would like to dispute that.
Jesus 1gb is £10 on PAYG 3G dongles, I can live with fair usage policys, but 1gb is a joke.

Anyways im concidering cancelling it and taking it back and getting an iPhone.

One thing that bugs me is the mobile internet, things are chopped a bit too much for my liking, im finding facebook mobile a real nuisance on it. Is there any way to get facebook chat on it? I dont really get why its loading the standard facebook mobile, I would definately rather look at a zoomed out normal facebook, its not like the phone isnt capable?

A couple of things - your issue with Orange have nothing to do with the N97. Also, whats this about being "chopped a bit too much" ????. Lastly, your Facebook issue have nothing to do with the N97. The facebook website detects that you are browsing using a mobile phone and automatically directs you to the mobile version of the website. If you scroll down to the bottom you will find a link to the full site

Like I said - your issues have absolutely nothing to do with the N97.

Anyone noticing performance improvements after the latest update? I'm considering getting one of these but the performance of ones I've seen seems quite sluggish and nowhere near the speed of the iPhone 3GS

Are Vodafone screwing everyone over with Firmware updates again? I had to flash my N95 8Gb with generic firmware just to get a software update newer than 18 months old for mine as they can't be bothered to 'approve' anything past version 20. i dont want a repeat of this..

Vodafone were the first operator to release a branded v11, which came less than a week after the generic UK release. 3 also have an update out now.

So tempted to get this, i'm on 3 and can upgrade at the end of this month, so hopefully they can do me the N97 on a decent deal. I could wait until Nov when my contract actually runs out, but i'm tempted on a new phone now.

Just installed the Vodafone Last.fm scrobbler on my phone, and it works fine :D. Officially doesn't support N97 yet but just said I had a Nokia 5800...

Hmmm does anyone know how to make the screen stay on ( it turns black & locks the keys&screen after a few mins) while running apps like nokia maps or garmin mobile XT ?

Also, does anyone know why my google maps keeps crashing ?

Nokia Maps: Tools->Settings->Navigation->Backlight

Google Maps is rock solid for me (3.2.0). It complains a lot if you don't have signal though.

My google maps used to be solid, until my sim got activated that is and it lost connection to my wlan (when I went to work), and asked me how to connect, so I used vodafone gprs or vodafone live can't remember, since then it crashes after about 3 to 30 secs from starting it up ( after I click to ''go to my location'' or start looking around in options and then 2 seconds after it stops displaying '' looking for gps sattellites'') .

Also the GPS antenna is iffy, the first few days I could barely get a sattelite signal after 5 mins in my garden, now I have connection to 4-9 sattelites ( or well, so many bars anyways in nokia maps) inside my house .
Actually, I'm amazed by the GPS signal atm inside my room, Garmin shows 4 out of 5 bars signal and nokia maps 4-9 ( erratic).

Found the nokia maps options and also the garmin options for the screen after a bit of looking, those are sorted :). The only issue with garmin is that it doesn't display the map correctly in horizontal mode ( the extra bit shows the map ''double'').

Guess I'll use Nokia maps for ''maps'' ( I like google maps far more) and Garmin for car navigation for now.

The reception for 3g is also funny, inside my home I get full bars gsm/gprs signal, and sometimes 1 to 4 bars 3G signal ( when I leave it it's usually 3-4 bars 3G, then I hold it and it goes to 1-2 bars 3g or loses 3g connection) . I go outside and nearly immediately 3.5G full signal.

By the way, is there an easy way restrict/block ALL GPRS and UMTS connections from all apps and things when you go abroad, I don't want a high data bill after a few holidays somewhere.

When I went on holiday with the N95, I just renamed the data access points. I also wrote down the settings incase this didnt work and I had to delete them.

You could goto Settings > Connectivity (I think) > Destinations > Options > Organise

From here you can move the data connections to a new group, you can call it anything you want. This will only work for applications that search for a connection by Destination name. There are crappy apps like Traveler (yes thats how they spelt it lol) that don't use Destinations and once they know the name of the access point they keep trying to using it.

Got my N97 from P4U 6 days ago and the lens is damaged (common fault), Is it Vodafones responsability or P4U. I would like to cancel the lot to be honest because the reception in my area is shocking really. Will returning/cancelling be a problem and who do I contact???

So I received my N97 yesterday as an Upgrade from my N95 so I have had a bit of time to play about with it. First impressions was wow it's a big screen and the phone feels slick, not too heavy either, and the slider has a nice action to it. There are some things that annoy me though like to answer a call I can't press the green button I have to swipe my fingure across the screen when the phone is locked. Secondly is how unresponsive the touch screen can be sometimes and I have had a few lockups where he phone became unresponsive and restarted itself. BUT the one thing that REALLY REALLY ANNOYS ME about this phone

Why does it not have a slot to hold the stylus!!? they may as well have not made a stylus for it if they don't want us to use it.

Despite all this I think Nokia did a great job for example I love the sensor that detects when your face is near the phone to avoid pushing buttons during a call and I think the whole Widget idea is fantastic.

I got one on Orange today for £40 a month. Not too happy about the 500mb limit though :( Phone is excellent. Stylus is awkward position when hanging off the phone, could have done with a slot for it! But other than that. Quick question, if i setup WLAN will it use the WLAN connection when near it and when im out of range will it then use the Phones Internet connection?

Under Settings -> Connectivity -> Destinations -> Internet

Set the priorities, so when the top one (your WLAN) is not available, it will use the second option :)
