Dead Space Is Awesome!!

How do you turn the horrible view off? I played for about 30 seconds then started to get a headache because i was constrantly trying to look around the character to see what was in front

Cool, a Dead Space Thread.

I have to say, even with this games many short comings it is one of my personal favorites.

The story, however flawed (sypathise with this guy ok?.....ok?!) is good enough to keep me hooked and want to go through it again, the atmosphere is perfect, great graphics and lighting.

The enemies are varied and very imaginative, also creepy as hell the first time you see them (torso with scorpion stinger? **** THAT). The weapons are in some cases either utterly useles or over powered *cough*ripper*cough* but they make up for any flaws by being rediculousely good fun.

The combat system of cutting off limbs is fun but gets a little dull towards the end, or just when you get the assault rifle and essentialy infinite ammo and realise that yes, in fact you CAN just shoot it anywere and it WILL die.

The view point I realy liked, it gave you a much more interesting view of the character, it made me feel less that I was him, and more that I was watching over him, and just trying endlessly to make sure he got through it in once peice, watching him limp around on low health being followed by increasing numbers of shambling horrors made me feel like I was the only thing between him and a certain, bloody and no doubt rather physical death.

The ship is a bit generic, grey badly illumiated corridors, glass doors, white corridors, more glass doors, a few glass walls to force ever annoying cut scenes and quite shoddy wiring apprently (that or the monsters seem to have been at the circuit breakers).

However, the lighting or lack there of made it seem even more that yes, this place HAS gone hell in a hand basket and you my friend are right in the middle...goodbye!.

The use of Zero mavity areas and in space sections was very well done (In space, you can't here **** so expect to lose a few apendages before this is over). It realy added to the fact you were in space, and again, that the ship realy had seen better days.

My one MAYJOR gripe with this game may seem unusual to some, but I sshall talk about it none the less.

WHY do you have a magic telekenesis/time mechanic hand? It does nothing but mean we have to carry a few boxes every few chapters or laugh when a Brute thing comes through a door as we freeze it in time, step smartly to the side and shoot it's kneecaps off. It makes it too easy, or in some cases painfully annoying (please shoot this stupidly non rythmic metal pillar at EXACTLY the right moment....haha)

All in all though, an enjoyable game for those who enjoy emersion, interesting enemies and NOT playing some roid raging armory toating main character who spouts generic tough guy one liners at after every bullet, and enimes that arnt just retextured chainsaw wielding zombies with sacks on their heads (yes RE5, I mean you).

If you go into Dead Space expecting a survival horror game with a nice twist for the genre and the ability to cut off spikey mutant zombies limbs with high powered cuting plasma guns then you will get everything you want and more.

Damn that was a long post.

I've just started playing, got this from HMV for £12, bargain.

First impression is that is very much a cross between Doom 3 (which I loved and most people on here hated at the time) and Resident Evil with a touch of the movie Event Horizon, I'm always a bit jumpy with these sorts of games which is why I love playing them.

The baddies I've encountered so far all look like something out of John Carpenter's The Thing, is there anyway to get them off once they wrestle you to the ground?

Can see it being pretty linear but not fussed personally, I'm a bit tired of free roaming games, I don't have the time to spend countless hours looking for little thing so it's nice to just be led through a story from time to time.

Finally got this back off of a friend!!

God damn, too scared to play it already haha. Can't wait to get back into it. just started chapter 2 again.

Ah see, i thought this too until i attempted (and succeeded!) to complete the game on the unlockable 'Insane' difficulty. In insane you'll be screaming at the television as your stasis charge runs out once again without a recharge station or portable cell in sight. You NEED stasis and you need it often. Then there's telekinesis, this is very important in the highest difficulty due to a complete lack of ammo, whenever i saw an explosive tank i would grab it and wait for an enemy to appear; it could save an entire clip of ammo in some cases which was a god send.

In the lower difficulties they seem overpowered, in the highest difficulty they become essential.

Well, guys, I have to say this is one of the best games I've payed..
I tried two times to start playing it, but couldn't, was too scary:)
Last week tried again.. this time at daylight:D With my 3 years old daughter next to me:)
..and it worked.. It sucked me in so quickly. This game is AMAZING!!! The climate is so deep, you can feel every moment spent in those corridors.
I remember my first thoughts about this game - didn't like the 3rd person view, couldn't get used to steering, idea of fighting with some tools... Now I can say that this 3rd person view is actually great, you can feel it better, like being Isaac:) Steering - you can get used to it after 10 minutes of play, no problem! Those tools - WOW!!!! Right now I just started 11th chapter and upgraded to max my line gun and plasma cutter. I also use rifle and lately that force gun. I sold flame thrower after 3 times of use. Used ripper for few chapters, but after I found out that line gun is bigger and more powerful version of plasma cutter, I stopped using ripper. Also that Contact Beam sucks.. takes time to load and its good only for big monsters. I found that Line Gun is the best, upgraded to max, can cut every monster in one shot, when aimed correctly....
My worst enemy - that **** The Hunter (Regenerator)... I hate it:)

Installed a day ago and played for an hour and just can not get into it :(

The perspective of the charater just puts me off.

Would be great if it actually worked with an ATI card. I don't like a choice between horrible lag vs. terrible screen tearing. Other than that disaster, it looks like a great game I will never be able to play again.

Finished it last night and although it gets a but samey after a while it's still a great little game. I say little because it took less than 10 hours to complete and really wasn't that difficult.

I played the game start to finish on Crossfire 4850's and it glided round no fuss.

All you have to do is turn off Vsync in game, and use D3Doverrider (free app) to force triple buffer Vsync.

That way you get solid FPS, no lag, and no screen tearing.

Same here. Horrible perspective, horrible controls... fail.

On top of which the game seemed terribly bland and generic anyway so I doubt better view & controls would have saved it for me. Yet it's inexplicably popular so what do I know eh.
