Ok basically my grandad was taken in to hospital this morning he felt dizzy etc as if he was going to faint, and looked in a really bad way, so we called 999 and a medic car came, found his blood pressure and heart rate to be lowm not sure about the blood pressure, and gave him 1mg of some stuff in to his vein to boost his heart rate. The medic called for an ambulance who took him away and said he will be in hospital for a few days.

Now I think/hope to god he's going to be ok, but the paramedics werent sure why his heart rate dropped after half of the 1mg (dont know what the messurement is called) of "heart booster medicine" kept his heart up for a while, and then dropped down a few minutes later, meaning they had to give him the other half (the max their allowed to use).

I've been left at home to look after the pets/house and cant help but worry as i cannot contact anyone as they are on the hospital ward.

Is there any professionals here perhaps who can put my mind at ease and maybe explain what could have happened? He takes tablets for a high blood pressure.

Thanks a lot

Im not asking for advice. Its not effecting anyone in any way?

Edit:

No medical advice
We ask all members not to ask for, nor give out, medical advice. This is because if a member of these forums gave out medical advice that was incorrect, the owner of OcUK forums could be held responsible.

Adrenaline? I think that's what they give to people with low blood pressure.

I'm pretty sure adrenaline would be for heart rate, but I would have thought adrenaline is used in larger quantities than 1/2mg - 1mg. Probably some stronger stuff they used.

He's asking for peoples advice on what might be up with his grandad.

Not posting here to ask how he can stop himself bleeding to death.

Hardly a 'medical thread'

There are many reasons why that could have happened to your grandad, but as we're not his doctors, it would be purely speculative without a full history, and that would be irresponsible and I don't think it would really put your mind at ease, even though you think it might.

All you should try to think right now is that you did the right thing, he's in the right hands, and yes you can contact the ward, just call up and ask to speak to the Senior Sister of the ward or the nurse looking after him, and they will hopefully tell you how he's getting on. Hope your grandad gets well soon :)

haha i can see why medical threads & advice are tightly controlled :)

1mg iv adrenaline would most probably kill you (its the dose & route used in the treatment algorithm of cardiac arrest)

if he had a slow heart rate they will have given him aliquots of atropine up to a dose of 1mg to increase his heart rate. a slow heart rate in itself isn't bad, but is if your blood pressure drops with it (dizzy/pale/collapse etc)

antihypertensives most commonly beta blockers will cause a slow heart rate. other drugs like digoxin will do it too. conditions such as complete heart block and inferior MIs can also cause a bradycardia (slow heart rate)

best advice - ask the docs looking after him, not here ;)

Just ring the hospital, ask to be put through to the ward he's on (if you don't know which ward, the receptionist will find out) then ask how your Grandad is. They should tell you as you're a relative.
