just having a browse for my next car and come across a Xsara VTS, relatively cheap for a low mileage one and 167 bhp

anyone got one?

they share the same underpinnings as the 306 GTI-6 iirc

so a very capable car and a GTI6 without the GTI6 scene tax.

Apart from being french and the usual problems that entails, they're a good alternative to a 306

It only LOOKS average and brand. It's a brilliant drivers car.

Besides, bland? Didnt you used to drive a Golf?

omg a car that Fox approves of, it got to be worth a look then :) :D:D

im just having a look at he VTS owners forums, gona read up on it.

budget is about £2k, need 4 seats and do ~16k miles a year.

I dunno, the price range used seems to be about 1500 to 4k so a 2k bargain might be doable. There's some with around 80k miles for just over 2k, you'd need to see them obviously.

ST24 will be easily doable though :)

Had one for 2 years ... good cars ...little faster than the gti6 due to the 5 speed box... handle well but very juicy .

Common issues are airbag lights (connection under seat) stiff clutch peddle (cable runs past the manifold and drys out/melts) and dunno if this is common but i had a few issues with the fuel pipe on the FI splitting and empting 1/2 tank of unleaded over the engine (happened 3 times) .

Persil

£2k ST200 is going to be a bit of a dog really.

Prices have really dropped recently, there was even an article about the prices in one of the fast fords.

No idea why they have dropped from £3.5k - £4k for a minter to being able to purchase one for £2k - £3k for a minter.

I've just bought one yesterday. 51 plate 42k FSH new tyres and brakes all round. £1400

An absolute bargain, its a great car, decent seats, decent brakes, decent handling, nice throaty engine noise, pretty quick. And up M1 last night doing 80-90 all the way it averaged 37 mpg. It's got auto wipers, auto lights, ice cold aircon, trip computer etc etc

I sold my 120k mile S reg Xsara TD for 800 quid so doubt I'll lose much money either. Why have I been driving a diesel for the last year???

Oh and although they are group 16 or something daft, I insured it for 420 fully comp and im 22 :)

You will happily churn up the miles in the xsara, french cars are normally quite soft, and the interiors are generally a bit 'plush'. 16k a year is just over average mileage really.

I know its a GTI6 in drag, but my god is it an ugly car, with GTI6 being relatively cheap now, i'd rather go for one of them.

You can get Xsaras up to 2004, the interior is nicer, more equipment. The last GTI-6s are on an X plate iirc and you will need £3k for a good one, a decent newer lower mileage Xsara will be half that.

Who gives a crap what it looks like they are both cheap old french hatches, and the element of suprise is fun. Dont think that ep3 expected me to be hot on his tail to silly speeds :)

Oh and I did 30k in my S reg xsara last year and it was faultless and very comfy. A smoother ride than my old e46 318

No doubt the 306 is a much nicer looking car, but for similar money the Citroen is going to be newer, lower mileage and very likely better looked after.
