Australia and Cars

Really loving the look of the Ford Falcon XR6, think i could get along with the dash provided the removed that stupid screen and fitted a proper lcd with Nav.

You can get nav instead, obviously the hire cars are not specced with nav. If you spec nav you get a colour screen there instead.

That would make it quite acceptable when looking at it from an ownership standpoint, Australia is on our shortlist for our next big group holiday, after i was denied a "good" car in America i'm determined to make amends this time round!

I didn't really pay any attention to that  Some guy at Port Douglas was doing some sort of bikini photoshoot though.

That's what happens when you take sand to the beach :(

i take it you didn't go to Northern Territory? they don't have speed limits :D

-edit, apparently as of 01/01/07 they do. ****s

Sigh.... no I didn't do the Northern Territory which I'm dissapointed about. Reason being when she got to Australia a month or so before me my girlfriend travelled down from Darwin so she'd already done it and it was a LONG way to go for her to see something she had already seen so we left it off.

Next trip to Aus we'll start from Cairns, pick up a car, head through Outback Queensland to Alice Springs, up to Broome and around to Perth :)

fair enough. it's totally worth it, although darwin is worth a visit. we started from there and worked south, via nz

i'd love to go back, need some money first though.
once you're down there, go to nz it seems a bit of a shame to go so far and not go there
and then there's tasmania. there's just too much!

broome is an awesome little port town. You can say hello to my uncle who works for the civil service and is the harbour master there :D

The water is so crystal clear out there, its like something out of the TV series "shipwrecked" the sands are that white, and the water that blue.

can get as high as mid 40s in the shade in the height of summer though !

Would be nice to see your route plan / notes if you still have them/ Remember i'm doing Cairns > Sydney so any notes about things to see along the way appreciated.

Looking forward to part 2, know when you will post it? :D

They seem to need accountants and thats probably what I'll end up doing so that'll be fine.

Wait, hold the phone. Fox a number bod? I never thought I would see the day. :D ;)

Been to Australia once, back in the year 2000, there was a awesome display in Sydney. Though I think it was winter as it seemed very dull outside from what I can remember. Travelled from the Philippines at the time for a holiday, and I enjoyed it - was only a two hour or so flight from there also.

NZ born and breed, brilliant bit of dirt:D

but then oz > nz in the way that usa > uk

oz and nz are very different but both nice in their own ways
the aussies are loud and annoying, much like the americans, but it's cheap, with lots of sun, sea, booze and clothes, also like the US

new zealand's really nice, much quieter and greener
stunning scenery, but it's smaller and it rains a lot, like the uk :D

australia is definitely worth going back to, i just think that you might as well go to nz while you're down there. lots to do and its lovely :p

Great write up, enjoyed it so far, looking forward to the next part. Australia is certainly somewhere I have to go at some point in the next few years.

My next adventure is to Thailand though, in December, I don't think a write-up about motoring in Thailand would interest anyone though, I don't intend to do any driving anyway tbh. Rikshaws and very old Japanese cars are the most common things there apparently, so not really the motoring forum's cup of tea :)

nz > oz in the way that uk > usa

I wouldn't say so. Both have a lot going for them and both are pretty different. I wouldn't travel to Australia now without spending some time in New Zealand and vice versa (seems rude not to after travelling so far :) ).

Its quite interesting how NZ is effectively open to the Australians (and Aus to NZ), as an Aussie you can basically walk straight in NZ while us annoying Europeans have to go through immigration. It is however much more expensive to spend time in NZ than it is in Aus (especially easy to spend money in Queenstown). Both have stunning scenery, but again very different. The North and South Island in NZ are also very different in themselves.

If you like big cities, I did prefer both Sydney and Melbourne over Auckland and Christchurch.

Really? GF is off there on a tour before she comes back so I guess she'll tell me if its worth going there instead of Oz again :p

It's stunning, so do both next time :p

I preferred the south island to the north.
