Champions Online

But Bill Roper is there as design director, what could possibly go wrong? ;)

Absolutely! Was completely screwed over by Roper et al with Hellgate, wouldn't touch anything he's involved in with a 10ft pole!

Who in their right mind thought Roper was a good addition to the team after the Flagship fiasco!

yup 17th for the open, it would need huge and massive wide sweeping changes to be anything but a consoley piece of pap to be honest. Huge it won't be, not after the free month is up anyway.

THe problem is the combat just isn't fun, its some weirdly badly animated crap which doesn't even look cool, is boring and the game is essentially auto attack, and apparently its essentially auto attack all the way to the level cap because you HAVE to use the basic attack to get energy to use the other attacks.

Seriously, I'd have been happier with an exact replica of COH but updated massively even with the same missions and world, over what I've seen of this so far. WHich is a huge shame, consolitis at its worst, making it basic enough to play on a controller would always be detrimental to a MMO which in general give you far more attacks, buffs, debuff's than the majority of other types of games.

Honestly even if it was fully stable I'd not be happy but considering it was constantly crashing. Yes for the person that will say "but its a beta" , a game that a month from release is causing this level of crashing is not promising.

Its COH, dumbed down a ridiculous amount, with terrible combat. :(

I've been playing the beta for the past few months now.

Will I be pre-ordering it? No.

I played CoH from beta to "issue 5" of its retail release and stopped playing as it got far too repetitive!

I sense I would spend 3-4 hours having all kinds of fun in the character creator then 5 minutes of meh in the actual game before returning to the creator for a few more hours before uninstall ^^

This list might help you guys. It is a list of all the pre-order options in the UK made by Monkeyguy over at http://thefew.guildomatic.com/.

About Roper, yes.

After the Flagship/Hellgate debacle I'm just staggered any other company would employ this muppet.

Mr Roper has been famous in the gaming community for a long long time before the failure of Hellgate. It's kind of sad in my mind that his one recent gaming failure has so overshadowed his many past successes. Just the human condition I guess: all that matters is the present and the most recent past. And lets be honest, Hellgate London NEVER looked good in any of the previews I read. Champions Online looks awesome. And Star Trek Online looks EVEN MORE awesome :)

I liked it quite a bit too, I didn't and wouldn't pay a sub to play it but it was pretty good fun. It isn't just that Hellgate failed though and people who bought the lifetime sub got screwed it's that Roper said afterwards he knew it wasn't ready for release and admitted some other things that he had lied about during the promotion of the game and it's early days. I'm sure there's a website that details the goings on.

So for a lot of people it's more about him personally and not just that a game he made failed.

Do'h, forgot it was another chance to constantly blue screen my computer today, patching now, blue screen's await me in 20-30mins, wooo.

Looks like at least one pretty radical change, you run into battle with full energy so can do some bigger power moves straight off with I assume energy building powers thrown in to keep it up. How big a difference that will make I don't know, the game started and kept crashing before I had more than one default and one power attack anyway :p

Yes, Hellgate did fail under Roper, but CO has been developed by Cryptic Studios, one of the biggest MMO software houses out there along with the financial backing of Atari.

The game is a definite improvement over CoH and I've spent many a late night beta testing it over the past few months.

Just playing more, can't believe anyone could say its an improvement. The movement feels horrible, just jerky, the targetting is dodgey at best, laggy and weird, the animations for attacks(on a martial arts guy) are boring, crap and full of stupid kicks that look frankly, crap. The interface is far worse, the lack of any real feeling so far.

THe weird as heck level/server setup, its just born for consoles, enter a zone after choosing one, weird small area's and lack of people.

Maybe I'm just missing(or not got to) the massive open world with any number of players around and the fact that attacks in COH actually felt like you were doing something.

EDIT:- To be fair, this time around I got a good 15 mins in before a crash, thats above 14 minutes more than I managed on Friday. if the game continues to improve by 1500% every 4 days it "might" end up good :p

This still is only the closed beta. They are making changes all of the time.
