Wish I'd gone to Uni
Fresher's Week is not all it's cracked up to be! From my experience a huge part of it seemed to be witnessing a bunch of spoilt brats getting drunk and acting like children whilst piddling away their student loan. Half of these students of course, do eventually grow up and knuckle down for their degree, but many don't. Many people choose to spend the rest of university acting like morons, and for every year that passes you get a new influx of children to essentially babysit.
If you want an idea what these people tend to be like just watch "Young Dumb and Living Off Mum".
University has its ups and downs, but like life: it's what you make of it. There is no reason why you can't have as much fun outside of university; move into a house with a few friends, go on holidays, go on random days out together - that is the fun part of uni and it was also the incredibly rare part as you're often too skint to afford it, lack the means of transport or have assignments to deal with. Do not make the mistake of thinking university is like how they portray college to be in American Pie because it simply isn't.
At university, you tend to live with friends which is good but you're constantly skint and you'll often find yourself having to argue with and put up with very selfish individuals who refuse to pull their weight or grow up; people steal your food, damage your possessions, make lots of noise and generally don't give a toss unless they're having fun. If you're lucky you might end up living with people who aren't like this, but I wouldn't put money on it.
The only thing you've missed out on is the opportunity to meet lots of people, make life-long friends and generally broaden your horizons. That, and possibly improve your critical thinking and knowledge base - again, something you can do outside of univesity. That said, I did go to university for the experience and have never regretted it. All I'm saying is, whatever notions or ideas you have of what university is, are probably wrong. It's 6th-form except you live on your own with strangers who can be hit-and-miss, you go out and get drunk fairly frequently, you learn a new town/city/area, meet a huge variety of people and you tend to grow up a bit. However, it's not all fun and games: a large proportion of your time could well find you sat in your room, bored, poor, and with nothing to do. You can't always count on friends either as quite often people are happy to lock themselves away in their room either with a partner or because they're too lazy to do anything.
Anyway, if this sounds like a rant it's really not. I'm a little ill at the moment so as a consequence I'm a bit grumpy so take that as it is. I'm just saying that there is no need for you to feel sad that you didn't go to university because at times it's a royal pain in the bum and anything that's good about it you can pretty much - as a general rule - do on your own. You're working, you have a paycheck; you can do things. Look at me, I went to university and now I'm on the dole and living in a state of limbo.
I dont know what your complaining about at least your uni has a union bar
Sacrilege! Which union is this you speak of?
