2 OCZ Vertex 30GB in RAID or 1 Crucial M225 64GB...that is the question?

ok so here the deal.

i am building a system from scratch but on my notebook i already own a 30GB OCZ Vertex.

so for my desktop i was thinking of buying another Vertex and doing a RAID 0.

however now that the new Crucial SSDs are out i realised that a 64GB Crucial is actually cheaper than the 30GB Vertex.

So the question is...performance wise would it still be better if i got the second Vertex or if i have just one drive (crucial) the performance will not be that much different?

Hi I used to run 2 vertex 30gb in raid and the performance was excellent. i.e. way over 400 mb in read and over 350 in write. HOWEVER i sold one of my vertex and went back to one drive.

The reason being: In practice its difficult to the notice the difference.

There is no trim on raid arrays.

The really benefit of SSD's is access time.

So I would recommend getting 1 drive, you can always upgrade to 2 in the future if you need too as well.

As you were willing to spend so much for 2x 30gb Vertex, I believe the Intel X25-M Mainstream 80GB would provide better real world performance than other ssd's. Even though the write speed seems signigicantly slower that others, it is IOPS performance that provides better results, and this is way ahead of other ssd's.

Theres plenty in this forum, on why this is more beneficial than faster write speeds, the only occasion it isnt is if you ware working with very large files....

My particular question is the Intet, or the Crucial m225 128gb... again, although the intel is meant to be great, the extra cap of the crucial is very tempting...

i won't be spending as much because i already own one vertex drive.

that's why i have the dilemma.

I'd keep the vertex in the notebook and put a Crucial 64GB in the desktop. Yeah, you'd get slightly better benchmarks, but dazzard has pointed out why there's no reason to RAID.

And the 64GB M225 isn't much slower than a Vertex, it certainly won't be noticeable.

Much better to have an SSD in both systems, than 2 in one system, IMO.
