Just told virgin to stick it ......

Er, do virgin throttle the xxl service?
Because there are going to be 7 of us on a line when I move... And that would just be retardedly unfair if they throttled us - if we were using the same bandwidth per person but lived in 7 different locations they wouldn't have cause to throttle us.

No throttling on the 50mb package as of yet.

As mentioned, no throttling on the 50mb package yet.

However your analogy is slightly flawed, if you lived at 7 different locations you'd be paying several times the amount;)

haha yes indeed.
But they key point is still intact. If one person used as much bw as 7 then there would be cause to throttle (sort of). We live in the same house, and they probably wouldnt care that there are 7 on the line and not 1, and throttle just in general.
Anyway... 50Mb/s down is absolutely plenty. I really want that 10Mb/s up that there have been rumours of them releasing :( though I don't know what their opinion is of running game servers or web servers on the line, it should be fine as long as it's fair usage - but they probably have something against it (I think Be are ok with serverage, but copper vs cable - theres no comparison in the ping times!)

i dont see how thats relevant if its one connection shared between 7. its one subscription you would have and would pay collectively the same as one person on the same package. why wouldnt or shouldnt you be throttled when the shaping is introduced?

Well there is no option to pay 7x the normal price (£350 / month) to allow 7x more tolerence of "unfair" usage.

Virgin Media do buisness packages too, it will be more expensive but most likely no capping. You will of course have to register yourself as a buisness first though :p

you can have multiple connections on the same line with virgin. i had 2 connections in a house share previously all they did was have the connections broadcasting on different channels

Oh that sounds like a very good option.
I've no idea how the cabinet connects to the modem/gateway physically (ethernet? or fibre on the lan side too?), but time will tell.

Virgin support is crap i agree, but you cannot beat Fiberoptic cable that virgin provides;)

I think when you call through the day its top notch actually, there's some really friendly British guys.

I've had to ring up about 5 times now as my problem still isn't fixed. I've stopped ringing through the evening as getting through to the Indian call centres is just awful, they follow a script as said before and with most of the guys their tone is well off and they sound incredibly patronising.

Virgin do not provide "Fibre Optic" to peoples homes, its to the green cabinet at the end of the street. Then copper coax from there to your house.

This is what does my head in about Virgin's adverts, BT could say the same if they wanted, and it would be just as incorrect.

I'm trying to figure out what to do with virgin at the moment actually, I haven't really had any major problems over the last few years but over the past two months the connection seems to have become very week. If i test my 10M connection it says i have 8.9M available which is fair enough but I can't sit and watch a Youtube video in high def without letting it buffer.... This just seems really out to me. At Uni I have a 10 Meg and it's lightning fast but at home my parents virgin connection has just become really sluggish for no apparent reason.....

Any ideas?

contention ratio is my guess.
10M could be whoelsale (could it?) or even if its llu they could be getting more business in the area and have not updated the equipment for the new capacity, or they could be quite content in stuffing more people on the equipment at the detriment of your connection.

and as for youtube videos, the servers rarely send 'em to you at that speed, I note them only downloading at about 350Kb/s but my connection is around 7Mb/s down.

well, thats good to know. Is that fttc then? whereas fttp is fibre to your actual property?

Fibrecity install fibre optic lines to the outside of your house (apparently they dont enter the property?), so thats a bit different. But I still have to choose an isp such as virgin for the service :S not sure how it works exactly. Also having to pay way more per month because it's not a virgin line.

I ditched virgin media a couple of years ago for this exact reason. TV and net was working fine then the set top box died and we lost TV. I rang an 0900 number for tech support which ended up costing about £30 and then got told it was an old set top box and i would need to pay then £30 for a new one.

Cue me trying to cancel, then being told i had to pay for my month. I told them to balls and cancelled my monthly payment through nationwide then sent then a few very angry letters which i had no reply.

At least at Sky there are a few english speaking people!
