Car scrappage scheme

I think the scheme can work for some.

My gf scrapped her 12 year old Micra which is due an MOT in 2 months and the clutch has just gone.

£3,100 scrappage and dealer discount later, and a brand new Hyundai i10 will be arriving in October.

Her first new car, and although equivalent discounts could be found, the cost of the MOT and repairs balanced with her feeling good about having her first new her, really making it hers, was compelling.

You are right, the process itself is not exactly hard. I've just never experienced a scrapyard that doesn't charge you to collect your car. Maybe that's just a case of limited experience.

I had no problems a year ago getting a scrapyard to collect a shell.

They came and rolled it off the drive as i put some steelies on, lifted it onto a HIAB and took it away.

I dropped the V5 off with them and collected £50.

Besides, the car needs to have MOT/Tax to be suitable for the scheme so you could drive it there anyway ;)

Markets change, and a year ago the price of scrap was sky high, now it's dropped a lot lower. A year ago that shell would have been worth around £100 (gate price), depending on how big a car it was. These days it's more like £40, so it's a lot less of an incentive for people to go out and collect stuff, unless they charge for it.

PK!

Ah yes, but then the argument is that the car is road legal.

And you would have to take it to the dealers somehow to take them up on the scheme ;)

If the car is-immobile then your stuck in the same situation no matter what!

I can't believe it :(

They'd probably get that if they sold it and negotiated a discount at the dealer.

 WHY ARE PEOPLE SO GOD DAMN STUPID!?

That's probably a £5k car looking at it's condition!

Well, at least it will be re-cycled. Guidelines by the government allows cars to be stripped for spare parts (inc body panels and interiors) as long as the engine block and main chassis are crushed.

The biggest piece of mis-information that you will be given is that you would get a better deal without the scrapage scheme.
The Scrapage Scheme was designed to sit "on top" of any existing or other deals you can strike with the dealer - and most dealerships are doing just that.
So basically speaking go in and look at the car and start getting the absolute best price you can.
Knock them down, get your free upgrades.
Then the scrapage scheme on top should knock off at least another £2k.

A lot of dealers are simply saying "Scrapage scheme is worth £3k of a new car" and they aren't expecting you to haggle any further (as they are in effect already taking a hit of 2k).
However further reductions can be had - just ask, remember its a buyers market at the moment.

It's a good scheme which seems to have picked up critics from a lot of people who I personally don't think understand how it works.
The money will run out sooner rather than later, so if you're interested in something brand new, seriously consider it.

Thinking of a new Fiat punto. What I really want is the old shape S3. Unfortunately 7 year old s3's are 8k plus. Decisions.

Scrapped my Volvo 850 for a new iQ. Would never have a) got 2 grand for the Volvo (which was shot) or b) have got 2 grand off list price for an iQ :)

Dealer took care of all the paperwork. Really smooth process, very happy.

It's a good idea in some circumstances. Like when you've got a tired old banger worth £100. £2000 > £100.

I think it's utterly ludicrous however, to waste a perfectly good, functional 9 year old car, which would make a perfectly ideal cheap car for a first car, or a family who can't afford / don't want to get up to their eyeballs in debt for brand new Korean crapbox though. It angers me severely everytime I see a story of something of value / a classic being scrapped

I know of at least 1 car which the block has been sold from that was taken in as part of the scheme.

If this is due to a scrap dealer taking a gamble or not I dont know, but he got £500 for the engine and box!

I have yet to hear of anyone using this scheme to buy what I consider a 'decent' car, it's all at the bottom/lower-medium end of the market for the most part, in-fact as has been said, some of the cars being scrapped I would consider better than the shiny plastic high-street decorations with sewing machine engines that are replacing them, it makes me sad in a strange sort of way. How many perfectly good cars have been taken out of service to increase this plague of hateful little roller-skates that are littering our streets from north to south, east to west :(

I admit to being a bit of a car snob, but I stand by my statements, most of these new scrappage scheme cars (that I have seen at least) are horrible nasty little plastic shopping trolleys which are hateful in just about every way if you love cars and motoring.

The Golf and Passat accepted of course.

Could someone clear something up for me please, could I:

Go into a showroom, not mention anything about the scrappage scheme, get money knocked off a new car, get loads of extras chucked in etc

Could you then pull the car scrappage scheme out the bag at the last minute to then get a FURTHER £2k knocked off?

I just feel that if you went in and started off mentioning the scrappage, they would use this against you when your trying to get a good deal.
