Looking for a fast hard drive. Don't think SSD is for me at the mo as it is too expensive at the mo. Raptor are too noisey so what does that leave me guys?

Just want the fastest i can get with the above in mind. Many thanks

not for a raptor monkey!

if speed is that important just get a 1TB 7200RPM drive and short stroke it.

Make a small partition at the beginning of the drive, the reading arm won't have to move as far then, you still have the same rotational latency tho.

TBH, most of them have so much cache on them these days they are all pretty damn fast. I've only got 2 500GB 7200rpm drives, but they are more than fast enough for me - and I use the machine all day for dev. work.

Might also want to think about what you mean by "fast". I do lots of work with large files, and working with them across two disks is about 4-5 times faster than having the work done on one single drive.

Nomadd

Partitions are always created from the physical center of the drive outwards. your first partition will start at "the beginning"

Actually it's from the very edge, makes sense because the edge will be moving faster therefore more bits pass under the head per second:p

But yeah partitions are always start at the fastest available section of the drive if it's new.

Why not go with the WD 640gb drive...They are very fast plus you get the storage space.

The WDs are last generation tech with lower-density platters. The current generation, with 500GB platters, will (should) have better performance as a result, at the 7200rpm level anyway, and even the 5400rpm drives offer similar sequential read/write to last gen 7200rpm drives. But the 7200.12s are not meant to be particularly good for OS use as the IOPS are surprisingly poor, although that might just be due to firmware needing optimising further.

Edit: That's not to say the WDs are actually a bad choice; they're just unlikely to be as fast as the newer drives. Faster than 5400rpm drives though as they have lower seek times.

The new Samsung F2 500g is supposed to be a superb drive! It will do for now.

Is it best to partition a section for OS, something like 64g? Then another for all my backup pics and another partition for my work related stuff?
