Engine oil prices WTF

i used to work for morris oils you would be surprised who makes oils for who and whats rebranded we even hat to sign to say we wouldnt say who but i only buy morris oils now always fully synthetic of course and the mark up on oil is mad if im honest take there 0-30w averages about 50 pounds for 5 litters but trade is around 18-20 pounds.

That can't be normal.

My old 5 hasn't drunk/burnt a drop in 5k miles, it's done 111,000 and thats with 0w40.

Opie oils can be good for the harder to find oils and has a wide range, they offer discounts (30% last month) quite a bit which more than covers postage, and Mobil F/S 0w40 is £23 (5L)

Maybe it's just something to do with VAG lumps then.
The 2.0 TFSI engine in my Octy vRS also uses oil - 3l between service sounds about right.
This is on a less than 3 year old engine and I know there is nothing broken about it at all.

Both her TDi and my RS4 take the same oil and we never really buy it sensibly. I put a litre in mine today as when I checked it was just on the minimum and it does like to drink the stuff, around 3 litres between services presently.

I topped up mine with a litre of this stuff, it started using oil a lot quicker was visibly burning it in the exhaust.

Changed the oil and it has stopped smoking. It seems to have a very light base oil mix making it very volatile. If you are using a lot of oil (which it sounds like you are) it may be worth trying something else to see if it improves things.

What do you use?

Think you missed the point ;)

Running engines in is pretty much best done on only reasonable quality mineral oil. If you run an engine in on super spanky fully synthetic you end up with poor compression ring seals as it prevents the rings bedding to the honed bores properly
Good point, my original point in fact :D

I just want £3.99 chip fat to run mine in. New rings, honed bores and new bearings. I'll be chucking the oil away after 500 miles :(

Carlube
Carlube 15W40 Mineral 5Ltr
Part Number: 521771201

£13.49

should do the trick innit? some makers even do a specific running in oil from what ive seen

I used to work in a motorfactors for a few years, around 2007 iirc the price oil literally doubled in a matter of months. Even the cheapest 20w50 more than doubled in price, along with batteries, anti-freeze and copper brake pipe.

because owning and running a car clearly wasnt dear enough

absolutely. ive noticed how the cost of almost all consumables have gone up. the raw material price cant have gone up for every material under the sun

Every single price increase in the shop I worked in was down to the suppliers increasing the cost price.

not all at the same time, its just highly unlikely. what about asda etc pegging their petrol and diesel prices at 99.9p and showing how other outlets were just over inflated.

i see the cost for other things as much of the same

Price at my local Asda has again begun creeping up above £1 a litre.

Then I suggest you educate yourself - the cost price of many raw materials is easily available to you via the power of the internet, including price history.
