Iphone 3G/S or HTC Hero?

Please just go to the shop and try one :p The fuss these kind of debates stir up is diabolical.

I'd never used an iPhone before whilst I was hunting for a new phone at the end of July. I'd never used a touch screen phone either apart from a quick go on my girlfriends Viewty which I didn't like.

Went into o2 store, tried iPhone, thought it seemed nice, but didn't really understand the hoo-har, it seemed smooth and responsive. Went into Orange and tried the Heroi, thought it also seemed responsive and smooth, although I prefered the querty keyboard (I could type more accurately on it), I also like the GUI, the build quality and feel (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=443462), Android is also a joy to use, so all these things kinda swung it for me, and the horrendous O2 contracts.

teflon coating ison the white version only from what I've read on engadget etc. not quite upto the iphone vs x debate, but the teflon coating on the hero (i.e. which colour/s have it) has been done to death in the hero thread on this forum.

What would posess anybody to get anything other than an android phone?

Do Android phones have much in the way of apps available for them? I'm currently trying to decide between an Android phone, a WinMo Phone (Maybe haven't looked into this much) or an iPhone, and the iPhone app market seems to be miles better than the Android market. Also if I get the iPhone, I know at least there's going to be a dedicated fanbase behind it, that can help with any problems I might have, whereas if i roll with an Android, it doesn't seem to have quite the same following yet.

I'd love someone to tell me otherwise, but as far as I can see Apple just has it sorted with the iPhone, it ticks all the boxes I need it to. I'll happily pay the extra to get a phone that I know will be supported in future by the manufacturer with updates, and will have the apps I want (specifically need a Sat-Nav on the phone for ease of use, love that on my N95, wouldn't consider a phone that doesn't do it anymore!).

I've heard good things about CoPilot on the Android phones, costs 26 pounds or so I think. As for apps I think there's plenty for the Android phones, not as many as iPhones apparently but as long as the important ones are there surely that's the main thing?

So far they seem to be fairly popular which I can only see growing, and should be supported well into the future!

Its only £26 for the iPhone version (I have it and its great) for other platforms its £60 I think.

TBH, for me nothing beats the integration with google accounts on the android - that was a big wow factor for me (updating contacts online, then seeing those changes reflected automatically on the handset), but thats to be expected. Still doesn't detract that its very very well implemented though.

You can do that with MobileMe, along with push email and being able to find your iPhone on a map and remotely erase it.

Some other features too but cba to go into detail. :p

IMO i prefer andriod, but i still do miss my iphone 3g for some things.

what i am getting wet over is webOS and the Palm Pre. i badly want one, NOW!

I have an ipod touch and love the UI but the Hero is just so easy to use and I haven't had any of the lag that has been reported.

I used my brothers 3g iphone for 2 months and now own a hero so i think i can comment on this, i think i would still choose the Iphone over it it just works smoother, my hero lags from time to time which gets annoying and i have a class 6 memory card in and the internet is so much better to use on the iphone.

The hero may have a 5mp camera on but its a dog really inside shots are very poor and sometimes its hard to get good shots outside, where as i think even though the iphone has a 2mp camera it takes good pictures.
