How much did your MOT failure cost you?

How am i supposed to tell if it is going to fail on brake pads? :( The last time it happened they looked ok to me but the tester said they were under somethingorother mm so failed it

Brake pads are a PITA to check so fair enough but honestly tyre tread and numberplate bulbs are what, 2 minutes in total? Takes longer to drive to the MOT centre or post on ocuk about how you failed :p

Not had a failure yet, but it would have failed had i not given it a good look over and sorted the following!
cv boot, lower arm bushes, arb link and a hole in the exhaust.
Everything an MOT inspector will happily fail it on without batting a eyelid!

When I first bought the Saab that cost £200 odd to get through its first MOT. Blowing exhaust and brakes all round, otherwise, fine :)

Her car was up for a fail on a blown side repeater and I warned the guy that he wasn't going to fail it and he was going to put a new bulb in. They charged me £5 for the bulb :(

So take the fail, buy a bulb from wherever you want, and claim the free, partial retest before the end of the next working day.

Leon checked the CV boot when he fitted the coilovers. It was fine when he checked it but must have fail0red before the MOT :( Otherwise it would have passed

Only failed one, that was the Honda's last one, on the back tyres. Stupid me didn't check them right to the edge of the 'check zone' :( Bah! I had planned on changing them soon though anyway so I guess that saved a bit of effort one way or another seeing as I got a decent set for a decent price anyway! Also it failed on the seatbelt being slightly frayed, and they even noted my Magic Tree! Me thinks they were a bit anal.. :(

Most:
4 new tyres, 2 front shocks and other misc items: £415

Least:
New indicator bulb: £0.87 (inc fitting ;)

I wouldn't be surprised if the MOT inspector had a good poke at a boot on the verge and split it! was there a load of grease around the wheel arch? if not i'd blame the MOT guy.

My mk4 golf is due this month

I have some predicted failures, would like some info where noted

1) Passenger side front tyre worn (this is obvious and will be replaced), I think the driver side looks abit iffy but the tyre place i went to said it looks ok. The only other tyre was the rear drivers side tyre slightly patchy and 2 small nails in it.

2) Handbrake issue - I had my back disks and pads changed about a month or two ago and the guy didnt do something right as the handbrake is not working effectivly, when pulled up its enough to stop it rolling down a hill, but put abit of acceleration on and it moves.

Iv fixed most of the other bits that would fail, although the electrics in my car is terrible (immob, electric windows will work then half way through the journey sieze working until you lock and unlock the car).

Both outer CV boots split - decided to change both CV joints (£30 parts + £100 labour)
Rear Calipers (£25 for both + £30 labour)
Rear Pads (£15 + £0 labour)

Define "a bit of acceleration".

You handbrake needs to be (I think) 16% efficient to pass. So as long as it holds it on a steep hill it should be fine I'd have thought
