Morning all.
I dropped a hire car back at Enterprise car hire in Glasgow on Sunday with no damage, checked the car twice and clean as a whistle.
That was at 1530ish.
Get an email at 1629 advising there was a scrap and dent to the bumper!
Ive asked for a review of cctv footage and details of the cars whereabouts during this hour...
I emailed back to advise it was 100% fine when dropped off and got this reply:

"I can take a picture of the damage where you parked it and I am happy to go and take a picture of it so you can see on the 4th Sept. The damage wasn't marked on the original contract when a member of staff checked the car in. It looks like the car had been reversed into a wall rather than a car banging into the back of the car."

W T F ! I drive hire cars like driving Ms Daisy as I have my two young children in the car and my god Im not a parking N00blett!

Where do you think I stand? My word against theres if theres no movements recorded and no cctv...?

No way am I coughing for repairs when Ive not done it.

You normally sign a form detailing any defects with it when you take delivery of the hire car, you should also sign a similar form when handing it back.

If this was done it means the hire car company accepted the cars condition upon receipt. Sounds like the hire cars valeting team has dented it and want to get the cash from you instead.

I dropped the car off, gave keys and paper work to them.
They said is the car fine, I said yes.
They said do you have a flight to catch asap, I said yes.
They said if the cars fine we dont need to check it.
So I left.
I realise this is open to abuse both ways...
They have locked 351.76 on my current account as of yesterday...Im fuming!

Just claim on your car hire excess insurance. I'm assuming you have it, right, as at 40 quid for a year reducing your excess to zero its a no brainer.

Yo dawg, I heard you like insurance, so we put insurance on your insurance so you can....

But yes, £40 a year is a no brainer considering most car hire companies have pretty high excesses.

Ive never heard of that. Is that through the car hire company or through a common insurance policy?

I paid £60 but it was for worldwide cover. This meant when I was in Oz I was able to hire cars with zero excess reduction, get a cheap rate because my excess was a staggering $3300, and not care. The Europe one is cheaper.

The only exclusion is that its only valid if you are renting 150km or more from your home address, which if a flight was involved I presume you were.

I recommend it to everyone, then decline additional insurance.

Wow, I didn't realise they could go in and help themselves.

Not sure what to suggest, I guess the next step is to fight Enterprise but i'm not sure how far you'll get if they can just dip their hands in your account.

At least it's put me off ever renting a car though.

They have your card details :( I've just had a bill for £18 from Thrifty completely randomly as well, money already taken.

At least it's put me off ever renting a car though.

Just get the insurance I recommended and it ceases to matter.

Looks like they've already admitted that it was fine when you took it back.

When you hire a car they note any existing damage on the contract documents before they pass the keys over. The rental company are saying there was no damage shown on this contract before the OP took the car. This is why you have to go over the car with a fine toothed comb and make sure every bit of damage you can find is noted before accepting it.
