Well a family member has asked me to find them a memory stick. They don't know how much they'll have on it, but i think 1GB would do them fine. Anything extra is just a bonus really. They want it as cheap as possible, but only if it's worth having. I'm not really an expert in this field, and i wouldn't really recommend my Kingston Data Traveller since i've had problems with it on XP and on school systems (they're a teacher). So do you have any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

(they're a teacher)

In that case tell him to avoid anything with U3. Lots of schools block it because they don't want people bringing in their own software.

It's probably best he asks his school ICT support team. Some schools even sell memory sticks to the students, they'll probably sell him one if he asks nicely.

Wrong gender... but still, i don't think that's entirely necessary. The IT department at their school is hopeless anyway. Besides, i know lots of people using their own memory sticks. Just thinking it's better to get from a reliable brand rather than the cheapest one's the school could find.

Recently got a 16gb Verbatim Stor'N'Go (think that's what it's called) and have been impressed it, very fast read and write times and hasn't missed a beat yet.

Well the Kingston i have doesn't work half the time on school computers, the rest of the time you have to use a 'cheat' to get around it. I've been looking at the Corsair one's, anybody have any experience with those?

Well the Kingston i have doesn't work half the time on school computers,

I have three Kingston Data Travellers (2x1gb and a 4gb) at the moment and I've never once had a problem with them. Mine are used on a daily basis for BIOS flashing, driver installs etc etc and mainly on school, university and college pc's.

I've got the 8GB one, and sometimes it works but most of the time it does on school computers. When you click open it asks you what program you want to open it with... so you have to click browse, then change it from programs to all files and then find your memory stick, where you can access the files in a roundabout sort of way. It's just not a practical solution though, so i don't want them to have to deal with this.

Tbh, from what I can tell from your explanation it maybe sounds more like a software issue rather than a problem with your memory stick. Could it be that the schools image may be screwed? Have you tried a different memory stick?

I think you're asking the wrong people the wrong question. With windows XP, USB memory sticks almost always just work.

It sounds to me like your friend needs to be speaking to the school ICT support people if she's having problems. If the school supply memory sticks this is the best way to go, means they can't blame the memory stick for the issue.

She's not having problems. She doesn't have a memory stick. She wants one. I'm trying to find her one.

I was just saying that i won't recommend Kingston because i have one and i've had problems on school computers.

I have had 3 Kingston Data Travellers and literally 95% of people on my course at uni had them as well. I have never heard of any issues or data loss. My friend even put his through the washing machine and it was ok, smelled nice too lol.

The older ones, by which I'm talking about 2.5 years plus had stupid little programs to 'sync' with your computer and always seemed to cause issues. All the newer ones are completely bare and like I said don't go wrong.

If the system is trying to find programs to open on the memory stick then you either have some weird autorun feature on your stick or the software is at fault on the school's computers.

Are there any weird autorun/sync type programs on your pen btw?

Do you know what pen drives do work on the school system? May as well just get the same as someone else at the school who hasn't had any problems because without physically trying it out I don't think anyone can guarantee any make/model will work without problems.

What you need to do is speak to your IT support and ask why your usb stick works, not blacklist kingston. Failing that, reformat it and put only data (nothing executable) on it and try again.

Second, my freecom data bar has now outlived three PNY usb sticks which were treated very gently physically but pushed quite hard in software. An OCZ rally is doing sterling work running ubuntu at present. I suspect the majority of them to be identical inside.

Finally, correcting K.C. Leblanc for assuming the person in question is male when you had used "they're" instead of "she's" is ridiculous, especially since "they're" implies plural or that you, Superewza, do not know the gender of the person in question; is utterly ridiculous and I'm impressed that he took it so graciously.

No. There aren't.

But yeah, i think i will tell them to do that.

@ above, i didn't put their gender because it's not really information i want to disclose. Just because i don't put it doesn't mean you should immediately assume it's one or the other. Needless to say, it's completely irrelevant to the topic.
