I was going to get the 500GB WD blue sata 2 @ £39.99 but for £5 more I can get the WD black 500GB (only became aware of the black from someone else's thread) with 32MB cache. Does the double sized cache make a noticeable difference?

The cache can make a difference, but there is a lot more to drive speed than the amount of cache it has.

The WD black is a faster drive all-round, though.

Since I'm buying a bunch of stuff and already over budget, I need to save wherever I can, even £5 if I can. Is the improvement quite significant or would I be happy with the blue?

As far as I remember, the difference isn't huge. If you're looking to save a few quid, it might be worth going with the blue.

Don't forget also that the warrenty with the black is 5 years compared to the blue's 3, might be worth considering :)
