As you can see from that link Canon have just announced the G11. The most interesting thing baout this is that it's predecessor, the G10 had 14.7 mega pixels but this only has 10. As far as I know this is the first time Canon have 'downgraded' there cameras in such a way. It seems they've listened to the criticism about the G10 and released something that will have better dynamic range and noise handling at the expense of resolution.

Rumours are circulating about a 60D and a 1D Mk4 coming out late august/early september and if the G11 indicates a shift in Canon's design philosophy they should be pretty impressive. Hopefully Canon have finally stopped fighting the megapixel race and might bring out some pretty impressive DSLRs soon.

I have a 50d and i honestly think that reducing the number of mega pixels for this sensor size might be the way to go. The 50d really shows up your lenses shortcomings. It's fine with my 17-55 2.8 which I had to sell my left kidney to buy. However more reasonably priced lenses don't perform as well as they would on a 40d for example.

I guess there is no hope of them making a firmware upgrade to give the 50d video recording capabilities /sigh. I hear the hardware is all there.

Cracking spec in that camera :)
Wish my 450D could have a flash sync of 1/2000 rather than 1/200 :p

If this leads to more quality, rather than more MP for other cameras that would be great :)

I've just been reading this paper on the physical limits of digital photography which discusses the physics of light and how it relates to digital camera resolution and noise in low light photography. It is quite interesting to see that with current optics we are already beginning to reach to limits of diffraction with a 24MP, 35mm sensor at f/10. Worth a read if you're bored :)

I hope the manufacturers begin to realise that a lot of their customers are a lot more informed on the technology of digital cameras then they think. I, like many, have been complaining for years about the mega pixel race, especially in the compact sector and how it has lead to a reduction in image quality at the expensive of marketing numbers. Hopefully this is a sign of things to come that the manufacturers will focus on image quality, not headline figures.

I agree with you here.

Unfortunately design strategy still depends greatly on the general public's perception that OMG MOAR MEGAPIXELS = BETTER. Hopefully if Canon do decide to lead the way they won't suffer too much of a sales hit.

If you get an EX flashgun supporting FP (focal plane or often called fast pulse) mode, you can.

Basically fires the flash in a very rapid sequence of pulses to extend the amount of time it can remain "lit". Allows you to use pretty much any shutter speed you like but at the cost of reduced power/range. Most useful for outdoor fill flash when you need a wide aperture for shallow DoF which then requires a high shutter speed.

So their current DSLRS are all rubbish? :p

Not so, but they could provide better image quality if they didn't focus so heavily on resolution.

Take for example the 40D and the 50D. The 50D had much higher resolution but similar image quality. If the resolution was kept the same but with the other associated technologies retained the image quality could have been much better.

I'm not so sure about the G11, it's getting bigger and more expensive each year. I saw a pre-order site advertising £550 for it!

I agree about the sensor though, the G9 had terrible dynamic range. Let's hope all sensors go this way!

What about the rumors of the Canon 7D

Or maybe a new entry level dslr looking at the on off switch (might not be same body as previous post)

something to consider huh.. its about time they released something

The second is certainly a photoshop. If you zoom in there are lots of shoddy sharp edges and patches of colours that aren't blended in around the buttons. M-Fn button is the biggest give away.

As much as I would love there to be a 7D I just cant see it being the camera that I want it to be (i.e. a Nikon D700 with an EF mount :D). Hopefully it will be a faster fps, faster AF version of the original 5D but who knows. Other rumours suggest that possibility of it being 1.3x crop sensor but not sure about that.

i think that you've got muddled up :) i was replying to justin

[edit] I think I just lost at the game of humour :(
