WD VelociRaptor worth it?

I'm looking for a new hard drive for my system. I mainly use it to play games, render art in Bryce and use OrCad Cadence electronic CAD software.

Just wondering however, is the WD Caviar Black 1TB a better drive (high performance and fast) or, two WD VelociRaptor drives in RAID 0, totalling 600GB storage.

Is the extra speed of VelociRaptor really worth the price? Or is the Black best for performance/storage price wise?

I like to have a lot of space on my main OS drive, as I like to install my games on it. I have had issues with some games not patching properly when not on the main drive.

Or a third option if you have the money for 2 VRaptors;

1 x Crucial 64gb SSD (for boot and apps and some games) = £107.99
1 x WD Black 1tb (for data and games) = £66.99

Total = £174.98, £55 cheaper than 2 VRaptors.

If you can blow a bit more cash, you can get the 128gb SSD for £209.99. Depends how big you need for your games?

Can I just ask why you think that's the best option? I'm looking for a harddrive for my new system when Windows 7 comes out, I'll mainly be playing games and rendering, space isn't so much of an issue. Was thinking about Raid0 2 small SSD's for boot and games and my current HDD's for storage.

It's not the best option as such, more of an example. Boot ssd with hard drives for storage is the current favorite, as ssds are better but £/gb ruins you if you use them for data storage.

Two 30gb ssds in raid 0 are better than one 60gb in terms of performance, but less so in terms of effort setting up. I bought a 30gb a while ago, will add another to it when prices are low enough

edit: raptor not worth it these days, no

Thanks Jon - that pretty much nails it :)

Aedus - I don't think it's necessarily the best option, just another option - especially if the OP has the budget for 2 VRaptors. A single SSD is faster than my RAID0 Raptors and makes Windows and apps more responsive. Games are also quicker to load, but the benefits there are more marginal.

Ah okay, I was thinking of Raid0 2 Velociraptors at 1 point, but I'll go with an SSD if they're that much faster :)

i have a raptor and it is not that much faster than a standard hardrive...i cant notice the difference to be honest

Always liked the Raptors (for their day)...never had probs with noise like many people and they were fast, I always ran them in RAID0 though. SSDs though wipe the floor with them.
