Let the Right One in. Film Not to be Missed (opens Friday)

Going to pop up town now and see if I can get in on BR cheap. Also a fine first test for my new Android mobile with shopsavvy. Scan the barcode and see where I can get it cheapest. I love technology :D

It was ok, but not amazing. Perhaps I'm just far harsher on foreign cinema since I get the impression that such foriegn films wouldn't be rated so highly if they were filmed in English.

Then again, I watched it drunk, so perhaps I'm not in the best place to comment :o

Excellent movie that punches well above its weight and proves that you don't need a Hollywood budget to produce good cinema.

Låt den rätte komma in!

Proper creepy. Glad people are liking it on here.

Can we start talking about the film/spoilers yet? There are some very interesting ideas and suggestions being made about Eli and Oskar that really does start to make you think.

Well I certianly want to so I'll just say so before hand, like this.

***SPOILERS***

Indeed, one thing most people don't know (because they are not anal enough to research the book as well) is that Eli is supposed to be completely androgynous, she states a few times in the movie that "she is not a girl", when in fact she is telling the truth, she isn't, in fact in the movie the "crotch shot" supposedly shows a castration scar, something I didn't notice but then maybe I just wasn't looking as intently as others. She is also supposed to be an almost complete opposite of Oskar, though this isn't show overly in the movie it is supposed to be a big part of the book.

Also interested movie trivia, Eli's voice is dubbed by an actress with a deeper voice because her actual voice is to high pitched.

I also really loved the scene near the end with Eli going into Oskars house uninvited, very disturbing.

Eli says she's not a girl because she's 200 years old, which makes her a woman. This is one of the reasons why they chose a woman to play her voice; to emphasise the anomaly of physical age in the absence of physical maturity. Castration scar? That's a bizarre idea; not sure where you got it from.

***SPOILER***

I'm getting this from reading about the book and from other people.

Basicaly the movie doesn't go into much detail and the scar thing may be rubbish, but who knows.

Eli is not supposed to be female at all, she's not supposed to be anything.

Ah, well I haven't read the book, so I guess the movie takes a few liberties.

The screenplay is by the same guy who wrote the novel so I would imagine it would be quite close without being able to fit everything in.

I heard/read the same thing (still have the book to read here) about her castration. The idea is that she 'became' castrated in order to attract the likes of that old guy, her 'father' (or what is presumed to be), living, protecting and gathering her food. There's a definite undertone that she is more to him than his daughter (she also does tell him what to do and where to go on more than two occasions). There is certainly a shot of 'something' when Oskar peeps in on her and it looks like a large scar of some sort - it's only a glimpse so not easy to tell.

Other ideas include that she is just grooming Oskar as a replacement for the old guy. He hasn't been doing a good job of collecting her food and eventually ends up being caught.

There is, of course, the nicer idea that she is just out to help and protect Oskar from his tormentors.

This is why I love the film - really makes you think and analyse what you're seeing/hearing.

The book apparently has a very pedophilic undertone, when in the movie Haken says he would collect blood for free, the reason is that in the book he says he will do it if he will allow himself and Eli to be "intimate", as he is quite obviousely a pedophile.

Sounds like a good flick this one, but will have to rent it on DVD seeing as the nearest cinema to me showing it is over 70 miles away boo!
