OcUK Photo Comp - Season Eight : Round Eight - "Cosmic" DISCUSSION

no it didn't. but how people interperate the theme and how they present the final image will, at the end of the day, be judged on how it does or does not conform to the rules and marking scheme ;) whether its seen as a single photograph or more towards the digital art side of photography.

That still wasn't my point :p I guess you're talking about what others were discussing.

My entry suuuuucked so i've changed it to another suuuuucky one but a daring 'what the hell is that' kinda thing.

Which is exactly what some of the things in the sky really do make you wonder.

Whoever is picking the theme next month can we have one that doesn't totally suck ass so that people who don't have loads of fancy filters and what nots can have a decent crack at it.

Thanks :)

meh! i like to try something a little different.

taken from dictionary.com think it fits these two.
2. characteristic of the cosmos or its phenomena: cosmic events.
3. immeasurably extended in time and space; vast.

Mine was taken with a D40 and kit lens. Not saying my photo is that good, but it certainly hasn't stopped me from trying.

....aaaaaaaand moving on...

I like DJ Switches entry - suitable etheral. Nice.

Thanks very much. :D I've only just noticed that photobucket seems to have done something strange and it's looking very pixelated for some reason. I've obviously got a lot to learn about that amongst other things.

I quite liked the theme for this one. It was my first shot at having a go at the comp here. I had just managed to find the power cable for my old plasma ball so thought it would be of some use, given the theme this month.

I'm lucky my camera is still working though. As the lens was only a 20mm I had to get so close that the lens was almost touching the glass. I'm sure you can guess what's coming next. The electricity actually jumped the short distance and went through the camera giving me a small, yet audible, shock through the body. How nothing was damaged I don't know. Lesson learned.Haha!

I quite like the various interpretations of the theme submitted by people. My favourites out of the entries are probably, in order of posting, Mark A, Willis and SteveOBHave. All 3 images and interpretations of the theme are very impressive.

On a side note, and a very noobish one at that, how do you retain or embed the EXIF info when converting the image from RAW to jpeg? I'm assuming there's an easier and generally more informative way to display the settings other than having to jot them down at the time?

Thanks.

Kei, what on earth is that thing?

Lots of photoshop work in the last months theme. It was a really tough one to interpret without it being a cliché and even harder to do the cliché justice.

"That" was a dahlia that got some fractalius treatment to make it look a bit more "cosmic". I wanted to find a flower that is called a cosmos but never got the time. At least then it would have matched the theme a little better.

I have officially totally flunked this months.
I took two pics, one IR and one at the same place at night, wanted to blend the two to have an IR landscape with star trails, implying a different kind of surface to Earths...

But it didn't work, I left the processing too late and the IR shot was too cloudy to work.
Oh well!
Just uploaded the IR one, completely disapointed with my own lack of effort.

I was however quite tempted to MSPaint in a UFO or aliens.... probably would have won that way ;)

...I assumed the less the picture was altered the better you faired. All I have done with mine is resize. Is there anyway of sticking the exif info back in after just resizing?

If you're referring to Heliums comment - he was being sarcastic.

The rules and marking blurb at the start of each months theme state the following:

* Technical ( 1 - 10 )

+ Use of Photoshop or Image Editing programs to enhance your photo (Including borders).
+ Correct use of Lighting/Saturation/Contrast/Exposure.
+ Correct use of DOF (Depth of Field).
+ Appreciation for Rule of Thirds, Golden Mean and other photographic rules.

- Overuse or misuse of Photoshop or other Image Editing programs (Including borders)- Bad Lighting/Saturation/Contrast/Exposure.
- Blurred photos due to incorrect DOF (Depth of Field) or camera shake.
- Unintentionally slanted photos.

So it is entirely at the risk of the photographer if they feel that photoshopping has enhanced the image or not.

I personally have no issues with photoshopping as long as it is done in a stylish manner and isn't blatantly slapped together. There is a vast difference (in my eyes) between a shot that has been subtly and cleverly edited and one that is entirely in your face and over processed. I don't think that there is any amount of photoshopping that can help an image if it is fundametally poor in composition and exposure to start off with.

...Wasn't referring to anyone's comments :) Just what I thought was the idea of the competitions in general.

I've only just got the camera so don't really know what I'm doing with it or any software for that matter.
This has obviously shown in my entry as I was 'playing' without any real intention of entering the comp but thought it had some vague notion of 'cosmic' so stuck it in :D

Having great skills in photoshop wont make anyone a great photographer but at the end of the day if you can put a picture on your wall that looks fantastic, you're proud of it, and its all your own work then who cares what steps were taken to get it there? ;) :D

To be honest I never thought of doing an IR image for this months competition. Ah well, apart from that I haven't had my camera this month so scuppered on two fronts there :p
