Hey guys, well a few weeks ago i bought and built my new pc,and all seems to be running fine except im not sure if the problem i got is actually a problem. The clock values of my XFX XXX edition 512mb 4870 arent right out of game, but when i go into game they go up to what they're supposed to be

is this ok or is there a problem?

ye thats very strange, but if its going back to stock ingame then thats where u want it :D i wouldnt worry about it rly

The current values at the bottom is what its running at, so the gaming one is fine, as thats the full proper speeds, so as long as it is going to those speeds when gaming, i wouldn't worry. :)

As mentioned above, they have 2x speeds, one for desktop (2D), and one for gaming (3D), so when your just browsing the web or whatever, it runs at lower speeds to save power, then when you start a game up, its full speeds kick in, its called powerplay.

ok so all is good:),just out of curiosity,do all 4870's do that or is it just mine?because a friend of mine just bought a 4870 and its running really hot just browsing the web etc,and its running at full clock speeds when idle. Also im using a gigabyte GA-EP43 motherboard which has some sort of power saving method,is that why the gpu runs at slower clock speed out of game? thanks

btw friends runs at over 70 degrees out of game,is this ok?

All modern graphics cards run at slower (2D) clocks when on the desktop doing little to nothing. It would be wasteful otherwise, not to mention pointless.

I have the XFX xXx 1GB and I had to flash the card, it doesnt change to 3d clock speeds correctly and causes the screen to flicker to, at least thats what was wrong with mine. As soon as I changed the Card BIOS it was fixed and clocks changed normally. It was a problem with XFX xXx edition cards.

I dunno then, but if its XFX xXx version then its still worth checking the bios, they have a link on their website to download it, worth a shot if you think the clocks are faulty.
